Jolly Nero accident death toll increased to seven people

Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) announced that commercial and passenger traffic has resumed at the Port of Genoa, Italy, following the tragic Jolly Nero accident which brought down the Control Tower. Commercial traffic resumed on the afternoon of May 9th as planned, with ferry and cruise traffic beforehand.
ISS advises that the full port closure, until 13:00hrs 9thMay, and extensive damage to vital port infrastructure, is likely to cause on-going disruption.Shipping already in Genoa is likely to be held in port for an extended period, while incoming vessels are being advised to stay anchored until advised, or to consider diverting to alternative destinations.
The Jolly Nero death toll has increased to seven people. The rescue operations continue as two people are still missing.
In a press release Luigi Merlo, President of the Port Authority of Genoa said,
“The port of Genoa is experiencing a dramatic time, a moment of condolences, grief and support for the victims and their families as well as the wounded of the accident. This is one of the most painful event, this is the time to mourn, but also a moment of pride for this community, a great family of thirty thousand people.
We want to thank those who are close to us at this time, the people from the Government who participated in our pain and were also close to us in an authoritative way. Thanks to all and please spare a thought, a moment, a prayer for the victims and our community.”
