An American geographer discussed about the opportunities which are emerging from the rapid change in Arctic for the Prince Rupert. Dr. Mike Sfraga, Director of the Polar Initiative at Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington D.C, has been studying the climate change in this fragile environment and how areas near the Arctic Circle can benefit from. He believes that Prince Rupert can take advantage of its location, considering that shipping passages through the Arctic are becoming viable options.
Dr. Sfraga said that the change in Arctic is now happening quicker, however, Prince Rupert is well positioned to take advantage of this situation as it is widely connected with the rest of Canada and US, having both port and rail facilities.
” It’s a rather interesting thing to think about as a geographer connecting dots. Really, that’s what shipping and commodity markets are all about. It’s about connecting dots.”, said Dr. Sfrage.
