BIMCO launched the BIMCO Security Network: a new network for security professionals, aiming to bring together members’ security experience in order to share and learn from each other.
The network will meet online three times a year to discuss issues related to physical security such as piracy and armed robbery, smuggling, stowaways, terrorism, large scale migrant rescues, war and armed conflict.
Cyber security is outside the network’s scope.
The network is open to all BIMCO members, with BIMCO being particularly keen to see those responsible for security at operational level among owners, charterers and managers who are dealing with the topic regularly.
On an invitation basis, other stakeholders such as military authorities, private security vendors and academic experts may also join on a case-by-case basis.
The network currently includes members from all over the world and will kick off on Thursday 12 January 2023 where the theme for the session will be threats emanating from Nigeria.
Earlier, during December 2022, BIMCO kicked off the BIMCO Tanker Safety Network, with the aim to bring together tanker owners and operators for relevant and timely discussions about industry safety.
Hosted by BIMCO’s Ashok Srinivasan, Manager, Maritime Safety & Security and Henriette Dybkær, Head of Membership Engagement, over 40 members from New York to Greece and Dubai to Japan dialled in to discuss which safety topics ought to be prioritised going forward.
