In this video BIMCO’s Phil Tinsley discusses the risk of cyber security in shipping and highlights what owners need to be putting in place to reduce the risk.
In particular, he mentions that cyber risk is an emergent threat. Until now people are aware of some minor incidents. Therefore, he stressed that there is need to set guidelines in place and educate the industry as a whole before a major incident occur.
Training and awareness of the individual has been the key to a successful cyber safety and security campaign within the industry. Without having that information that the individual has when he board the ship or when he is communicating with the port then he doesn’t got the knowledge to understand what the threat is and how to prevent it.
BIMCO, together with other organisations, is updating industry guidelines that will be published in the spring after having been approved by IMO.
