The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, inaugurated a RO-RO terminal at Baku International Sea Trade Port complex, in in Alat settlement, Garadagh district.
The new RO-RO terminal will be able to accommodate 60,000 trucks or 1.8 million tons of cargo per year, CBC news agency CBC reported.
Furthermore, one bridge of the terminal will have an annual capacity of 800,000 tons, with the second having 1 million tons. There are seven more bridges, which will have been built by the end of January.
Other facilities, such as warehouses, auxiliary and other infrastructure, are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2018, with the operational building expected to be ready by the end of May.
Azerbaijan wants to make the Port of Baku a maritime gateway to Azerbaijan and a multimodal transit and logistics hub along the ancient Silk Road.
At the time, this project includes 3 phases, after the completion of which, the Port of Baku will have the ability to manage 25 million tons of freight and up to 1 million TEU per year.
