For Innovative Air Quality Improvement Technologies
APL has won the annual San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP) Air Quality Award for the second year running
Jointly presented by the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach, the 2013 CAAP Air Quality Award lauds APL’s “Innovative Air Quality Improvement Technologies” and commitment to reducing the environmental impact of ocean transportation.
As part of this overall commitment, APL is particularly engaged in innovative air quality improvement technologies, including the installation of a seawater scrubber aboard the APL England.
“The selection of APL as the 2013 recipient of the CAAP Air Quality Award is a meaningful acknowledgement of our efforts and contributions in developing effective environmental solutions,” said APL Regional President for the Americas Gene Seroka. “This award is further evidence of our vision and commitment to our customers, vendors and industry peers.”
The company is on course to reduce carbon emissions 30 percent from its shipping operations by 2015, based on CO2 levels audited in 2009.
Global container transportation company APL is strongly committed to improving air quality at the San Pedro Bay ports. The company was the first to install and test “seawater scrubber” technology on a container ship calling at the two ports. The technology involved the installation of a single low-maintenance seawater scrubbing device on the ship’s three auxiliary engines, which helped reduce contaminants in the exhaust stream, removed waste from the wash water prior to discharge overboard, and maintained the discharged water pH within International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidelines. The seawater scrubber successfully reduced SOx emissions by as much as 99 percent and 70 percent for PM when running on HFO (heavy fuel oil), and 97 percent for SOx and 78 percent for PM when using MGO (marine gas oil). |
