Canada announced that one Canadian passenger of the Grand Princess tested positive for COVID-19, while in quarantine at Canadian Forces Base Trenton. The passenger’s symptoms are mild.
A plane chartered by Canada to repatriate its citizens from a cruise ship held off the coast of California after a COVID-19 outbreak landed at CFB Trenton on March 9.
Those on board the plane were required to pass a screening process before being allowed to board the flight, while anyone exhibiting symptoms of the virus was not permitted to board.
Overall, nine Canadians stayed behind in California, including some crew who either tested positive for the virus or who needed treatment for other medical conditions. It is not clear how many of those nine Canadians had tested positive for the virus.
The passenger started developing symptoms of the virus during the flight back to Canada.
This case is Canada’s 102nd case of COVID-19.
Thousands of passengers on board the cruise ship Grand Princess were waiting until March 10 to leave the ship, which was moored in the San Francisco Bay Area. Now hundreds of passengers will be shipped to military bases for at least two weeks of quarantine.
The ship was idling for days off the northern California coast, due to evidence that it was the carrying passengers that had contracted COVID-19. Namely, the ship was carrying 3,500 passengers and crew on board, including 21 who had tested positive for the virus.
