AIDA Cruises, part of Carnival Corporation, announced that it will gradually start regular operations to supply ‘AIDAperla’ with LNG, during the ship’s stay in the ports of Barcelona, Marseille and Civitavecchia.
The use of liquefied natural gas for energy supply on board reduces the emission of nitrogen oxides by up to 80% and the emission of carbon dioxide by a further 20%, which significantly contributes to increasing the quality of air in the main cruise ports of the western Mediterranean.
AIDAperla is the sister vessel of LNG-fueled ‘AIDAprima’, delivered last year. AIDAprima is the company’s first of a new generation of LNG-fueled ships.
From Autumn 2018, with the commissioning of AIDAnova, the shipping company will be able to operate its next generation of ships with 100% LNG – in the harbor and at sea. A second identical sister ship is scheduled in the spring of 2021.
Reducing emissions and increasing efficiency is an essential criterion for environmentally friendly ship operations, in line with AIDA’s current sustainability report.
