On 31 October 2017, the UK registered and commercially operated yacht 'CV24' ran aground on Cape Peninsula, South Africa. CV24 was abandoned and the crew was rescued uninjured. There was no pollution and the wreck was subsequently disposed of locally. UK MAIB issued an investigation report on the incident.

Recently, USCG terminated the voyage of a yacht after found to violate several regulations governing the operation of commercial passenger vessels, including carrying more passengers. USCG says this highlights the need for continued coordination between the Coast Guard, the passenger vessel industry, and local law enforcement.

USCG, Miami-Dade Fire Department and Fast Response Marine Towing and Salvage rescued 10 people, including five minors, from the water near Nixon Beach, on Saturday. At approximately 7:21 p.m., Miami-Dade dispatch sent USCG watchstanders a report of 10 people in the water from a capsized 20-foot pleasure craft.

The US Coast Guard terminated the voyage of the 65-foot pleasure yacht Zenith at Sea Isle Marina, as it discovered several safety issues and environmental concerns, which included the carriage of more paying passengers than they were certified to carry onboard the vessel. The boarding was conducted after the yacht allided with the Venetian Causeway Bridge earlier that day.

The US Coast Guard located a motor vessel with 49 people onboard after one of the passengers called 911 reporting her concerns that the operator had become disoriented in heavy fog off of Navy Pier near the Chicago Harbor breakwall, on Saturday, June 9. The master of the vessel was issued a violation for negligent operations and for operating without the required navigation lights.

A US Coast Guard helicopter and boat crews rescued six people from a sinking vessel 12 miles southeast of Channel Islands Harbor, on Sunday, June 10. There were no reported injuries and all six boaters were reunited at Coast Guard Station Channel Islands Harbor. The mariners were prepared to abandon ship with life jackets on.

On the occasion of its 2017 Recreational Boating Statistics release earlier this week, the USCG issued a summary of important safety measures that can be life-saving in recreational boating. Despite reporting a 6.1% decrease in boating fatalities from 2016, the report shows that 2017 had the second highest number of fatalities on record in the last five years.

In its 2017 Recreational Boating Statistics, USCG reported a 6.1% decrease in fatalities from 2016, with a total of 658 incidents. From 2016 to 2017, boating injuries also decreased 9.4% from 2,903 to 2,629, and accidents decreased 3.9% from 4,463 to 4,291. However, the report shows it was the second highest number of fatalities on record in the last five years.

In its recently-published annual piracy report, OBP reported a total of 71 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships in Latin America and the Caribbean Sea throughout 2017, which represents a 163% increase over 2016. Most incidents occurred in territorial waters, with anchored yachts being the primary targets for attackers.
