The International Association of Ports and Harbors decided and announced that the World Ports Climate Initiative will be expanded to extend its scope from climate action to a full range of sustainability port development challenges the industry is facing. 

The International Association of Ports and Harbors' President Santiago Milà informed that World Port Climate Initiative is now extending into a World Port Sustainability Programme, that is expected to identify how the global port sector can contribute to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, covering biosphere, society and economy. 

In order to help reduce NOx, SOx, and CO2 emissions, the World Ports Climate Initiative has established a program for measuring Environmental Ship Index, the Republic of the Marshall Islands informed. The RMI Maritime Administrator issued an advisory to inform and encourage participation in the program.

French Port Marseille Fos said that it has joined the World Ports Climate Initiative and is now set to reduce port dues for ships performing better than required, under air pollution regulations. From July 1 this year, the incentive will apply to eligible ships among the 236 container carriers and cruise vessels – a 60/40% split – that call at the port.

The Port of London has said that it is set to become the first UK port to recognise ship owners committed to progressively improving their environmental performance, as part of a wider approach to reduce the port’s environmental impact.

A new interactive shipping map, developed by the WPCI depicts the status of bunkering activities in WPCI ports as well as non WPCI ports.
