The World Shipping Council (WSC) is taking additional action to strengthen cargo safety standards and protect the lives of the people working in the supply chain, the environment, and the integrity of the global supply network.

Operation TIN CAN, a joint operation involving customs, police, and other agencies, successfully cracked down organized crime efforts that exploit the container supply chain to smuggle drugs. 

The World Shipping Council issued a statement earlier this week to highlight that the Shipping Act is a useful tool but the amendments under the new U.S. law H.R. 1696, will disable vessel sharing. The Ocean Shipping Antitrust Enforcement Act, introduced in 2022, amend title 46, United States Code, to repeal certain antitrust exemptions for ocean common carriers.

Bureau of International Containers (BIC), Contracts of affreightment (COA), Institute of International Container Lessors (IICL) and World Shipping Council (WSC) jointly issued updated guidelines for the cleaning of containers, providing easy-to-use best practices.

Mr. John Butler, President and CEO of the World Shipping Council (WSC), highlights that safety comes first and, in that regard, WSC is working along with other members to prevent accidents due to unsafe cargo. He refers to the MARINE Top Tier study that revealed the risks of parametric for container vessels and continues work to prevent incidents with containers lost at sea. 

World Shipping Council has released an informative video on how containers can facilitate the start and spread of pests to communities around the world, risking agriculture, forestry & natural resources.

In an open letter, the World Shipping Council (WSC) together with Danish Shipping and the Methanol Institute urge decision-makers to reach an agreement on the FuelEU Maritime which will help reduce shipping GHG emissions.

After the European Parliament, Council and Commission reached a preliminary agreement on maritime elements of the EU ETS, the World Shipping Council (WSC) stated that "liner shipping is ready for the EU ETS Maritime".

As the EU and liner shipping are working towards a shared objective to minimize total greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the climate impact of shipping, the World Shipping Council (WSC) believes that the inclusion of shipping in the EU ETS will encourage shipping’s journey towards decarbonisation.

The Asian Shipowners' Association (ASA) emphasized its long-standing policy that competition law exemptions for consortia like the CBER are indispensable for the healthy development of the liner shipping industry and the maintenance of reliable liner services to the entire global trading community.
