Study examines wastewater discharges in Greenwich

A study conducted by USFDA, U.S. EPA's New England Regional Laboratory, and CTDABA will be tracking the flow and dispersion of wastewater discharging into Long Island Sound from the Greenwich Water Pollution Control Facility , located on Grass Island in Greenwich Harbor. Information collected will be used to evaluate the impact of wastewater discharges on shellfish growing areas in Greenwich.

Korean Company fined for illegal discharge of waste water

United States District Court accepted the guilty plea of Doorae Shipping Co., LTD, a South Korean maritime operations company, and sentenced the company to pay a fine of $750,000, a community service payment of $200,000, and a term of two years of probation for the failure to maintain an accurate oil record book, in violation of the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships, and making false statements to the U.S. Coast Guard concerning the discharge of oil contaminated bilge water.

Canada approves proposal for discharge of untreated wastewater

  Environment Canada issued a news release  stating that it has conditionally approved the proposal of the City of Montreal to discharge approximately 1.76 billion gallons of untreated wastewater into the St. Lawrence River during construction work on its sewage treatment system. A final Order requiring the City of Montreal to modify its plans to discharge untreated wastewater into the St. Lawrence River has been issued. The Order requires that the City of Montreal: Prepare and have in place a management plan with respect to unanticipated deposits from large industrial, institutional or commercial facilities to the City of Montreal’s sewers during the construction period. Establish visual surveillance during the discharge, and deploy measures to clean up affected areas. Conduct enhanced monitoring of water quality, sediments and plants prior to, during, and after the discharge, and provide this data to Environment and Climate Change Canada. Participate in a comprehensive review of the events leading to this incident, which will be led by the Department of theEnvironment and Climate Change, and will include participants from affected First Nations, the Province, the City, as well as other interested parties, to ensure we establish and maintain respectful relationships with First Nations. Review on wash water discharge requirements for Scrubbers

 The 2013 VGP took effect on 19 December 2013, and regulates discharges incidental to the normal operation of vessels covered under the scope of the VGP (non-recreational vessels greater than 79 feet in length, which are not vessels of the armed forces, operating in a capacity as a means of transportation). Exhaust Gas Scrubber Washwater Discharge is addressed under section 2.2.26 of the Final 2013 VGP In accordance with Regulation 4 of MARPOL Annex VI, EGCS units may be used as an alternative means of compliance with the more stringent fuel oil sulphur limits established under Regulation 14 of MARPOL Annex VI, subject to approval by the Administration. Owners/operators are reminded that regulations pertaining to the VGP are applicable to discharges into US waters extending to the outer reach of the 3 mile territorial sea as defined in section 502(8) of the US Clean Water Act. Under VGP regulations, the pH limit for the washwater effluent shall not be less than 6.0, measured at the overboard discharge only.This is not consistent with the methods for determining the pH limit under the IMO EGCS Guidelines (resolution MEPC.259(68)), where the pH limit for the washwater effluent is to be no less than 6.5 ...
