Water Ballast Convention will impact international shipping

A leading London broking house warns The IMO's Water Ballast Convention (WBC) impact on shipping will be enormous, particularly for tankers, a leading London broking house has warned.For example, Wartsila Water Solutions recently said that fitting a VLCC with the required equipment 'can currently put an owner back as much as $8 mill' and further stated that the technology is relatively untested.Another problem will be the huge number of tankers (and indeed other vessel types), which will need systems installed, Gibson Research said in its latest weekly report.The International Chamber of Shipping has suggested that over 20 vessels per day will need to have systems installed to meet the convention, which will require all ships be fitted with ballast water management systems by mid-2017.According to one major class society, at present there are only 17 approved BWT systems on the market and concerns have also been raised about the availability of equipment for ships with large ballast water requirements.The new regulations will also generate an enormous amount of work for shiprepair yards as owners jostle for slots tied into their class survey dates.Given the recent trading conditions, the rapid fall in asset values and spiralling bunker prices, early implementation of ...

Wärtsilä markets new engine to tanker sector

For greater reduced emissions and fuel consumption Wärtsilä has announced that it had started up its new 6-cylinder Wärtsilä RT-flex48T engine on 24th November 2011 at the facilities of Wärtsilä licensee QMD (Qingdao Qiyao Wärtsilä MHI Linshan Marine Diesel) in China.This new engine is the result of further development of the existing Wärtsilä RTA48T engine and is being marketed to the smaller bulker and tanker sectors, including Handysizes and Handymaxes.By introducing this new engine, Wärtsilä said that it had completed its adaptation of its range of low-speed RT-flex engines for all bore sizes. Use of ultra low sulphur diesel fuel Wärtsilä reports that it has been contracted by Arctia Offshore of Finland to fit combined NOx reducer (NOR) and oxidation catalyst (OXI) technology to two of Arctia's multi-functional icebreaking vessels.The ships, Fennica and Nordica, are based on a modified icebreaker design, and at the same time as the new equipment is fitted, the machinery will be converted to enable the use of ultra low sulphur diesel fuel. The conversion will allow the ships to fulfil the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) emission requirements for operating in the Arctic Ocean. Wärtsilä to deliver an integrated propulsion system for the first LNG-fuelled US-flagged OSVs Wärtsilä says that it is to deliver an integrated propulsion system based on the use of LNG for two offshore support vessels for operation in the Gulf of Mexico. These will be the first LNG-fuelled US-flagged OSVs.The two advanced platform supply vessels will be owned by Harvey Gulf International Marine. The contract includes options for supplying propulsion equipment for additional follow-on vessels.Wärtsilä's scope of supply is for the dual-fuel machinery, an electrical and automation package, complete propulsion, the LNG fuel storage and handling components, in an integrated package. The ships, to the STX Marine SV310DF design, will be powered by six-cylinder 34DF dual-fuel engines. The LNG storage capacity of 290m3 enables more than a week of vessel operational time. In addition, the vessels will carry 5,520dwt at load line and have a transit speed of 13 knots. New two-stroke gas engine performance meets impending IMO emission rules Finnish engine designer and manufacturer Wärtsilä Corporation says that tests underway on its new two-stroke gas engine show it complies with the IMO Tier III NOx emission limits. Wartsila says this sets a "new benchmark for low-speed engines running on gas".The trials took place at the company's facilities in Trieste, Italy. The tests were carried out on September 19 in conjunction with Wärtsilä's Licensees Conference in Trieste.The engine concerned, the new RTX5 two-stroke test engine, is part of Wärtsilä's two-stroke dual-fuel gas engine technology development programme. The agreement will focus first on supplies from the US Gulf Coast, and then later expand Wärtsilä, the marine industry's leading solutions provider, and Shell Oil Company have signed a Joint Co-operation Agreement aimed at promoting and accelerating the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel. The agreement was signed in August 2011 and will run for several years.Supplies of low cost, low emissions LNG fuel will be made available to Wärtsilä natural gas powered vessel operators, and other customers by Shell.
