US MARAD issued a Maritime Advisory, providing guidance to U.S. flagged operators with vessels transiting the Gulf of Guinea. As pirates/ armed groups operating in the GoG region continue to carry out attacks on vessels, using automatic weapons, US MARAD strongly recommends operators to forward this Advisory to their ships.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration announced it will make available $9.8 million in Federal funding to support capital improvements and employee training at small U.S. shipyards. The grants, provided through the Small Shipyard Grant Program, aim in a modernization of operations, efficiency improvement and a highly skilled workforce.

The US Maritime Administration (MARAD) has issued warning concerning the US-flag vessels which transit the Sulu and Celebes Seas. In light of recent boardings and kidnappings for ransom in that area, ship operators are advised to remain vigilant and adhere to counter-piracy measures when transiting the area.

The US Maritime Administration issued an advisory recommending that US-flag commercial vessels avoid entering or loitering near Yemen’s Red Sea ports and that vessels transiting the area exercise special vigilance. US MARAD also warns U.S. flagged commercial vessels transiting the region to conduct a pre-voyage risk assessment.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has welcomed the newest vessel to the Maritime Security Program (MSP) in the strategic port of Beaumont, Texas. Renamed the M/V Liberty Passion, the vessel is the third ship owned by Liberty Global Logistics to join the MSP fleet.

The training material will help mariners better identify and prevent sexual harassment, bullying, retaliation, violence and other coercive behaviors as well as assist industry efforts to aggressively promote a culture of zero tolerance for such behavior.

The US Maritime Administration announced the availability of a report that quantifies methane slip and fugitive emissions from using liquefied natural gas (LNG) for vessel operations and bunkering. The study, completed in partnership with the University of Delaware and the Rochester Institute of Technology, builds upon earlier work identifying life cycle emissions associated with LNG use using a “well-to-hull” analysis.
