According to Gard P&I Club, geopolitical tensions in the Red Sea have increased since the commencement of the Israel-Gaza conflict and this is particularly relevant for assets with links to Israeli transiting the region.

The USCG informed that the US Air Force released a memorandum to inform the GPS community of an update to the GPS ground control software that may impact some user equipment. The software update will be installed again, until March 1, 2018, in order to give time for manufacturers to bring GPS receivers into compliance with the Interface Specification.

The West of England P&I Club informs that India has now approved eDOT Marine Laboratories to use the modified Proctor / Fagerberg test for iron ore fines. A table include the newly revised list of DGS approved laboratories has been released. The table also includes the validity of their approval, and the test methods which they are authorized to use.

Classification society DNV GL recently updated its rules and standards for ships. New and amended rules were formally approved on 1 July and are included in the 2016 July edition of the rules.

A total of three approaches occurred over the reporting period.Southern Red Sea (SRS)/Bab Al Mandeb (BAM) / Gulf of Aden (GOA)/Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC)The level of piracy activity was low in this region during this reporting period. Masters are reminded that a large number of fishing vessels operate in the Southern Red Sea (SRS). The fishing vessels may approach a merchant ship in order to maximise fishing opportunities and to warn ships from getting too close to their fishing nets.Arabian Sea (AS)/Greater Somali Basin (SB)There have been three suspicious approaches in the Arabian Sea and the Greater Somali Basin over the reporting period.Piracy activities have been recently reported in the Greater Somali Basin in vicinity of the Seychelles.
