02-08 February 2012 (Updated: 08 February 2012) OverviewDuring the reporting period of 02 - 08 February 2012 there has been increasing number of pirate related activities compared to the previous week. A total of three approaches occurred over the reporting period.Southern Red Sea (SRS)/Bab Al Mandeb (BAM) / Gulf of Aden (GOA)/Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC)The level of piracy activity was low in this region during this reporting period. Masters are reminded that a large number of fishing vessels operate in the Southern Red Sea (SRS). The fishing vessels may approach a merchant ship in order to maximise fishing opportunities and to warn ships from getting too close to their fishing nets.Arabian Sea (AS)/Greater Somali Basin (SB)There have been three suspicious approaches in the Arabian Sea and the Greater Somali Basin over the reporting period.Piracy activities have been recently reported in the Greater Somali Basin in vicinity of the Seychelles. On 8 February one merchant ship was approached (011/12) approximately 240nm east of the Seychelles (0418S 05959E) around 0730Z. Five armed people on board a white skiff with blue stripes.
