UK MCA reiterated IMO advice on  the prevention of fire in Engine Rooms, Cargo Pump Rooms and other high fire risk spaces, following a recent incident of fire onboard a UK flagged vessel which resulted in one fatality. UK MAIB investigation highlighted that there were no systems in place to require the inspection of the ships low pressure fuel pipework.

Inmarsat is migrating the GMDSS Services, Inmarsat C and Fleet 77, from the Inmarsat-3 satellite constellation to the Inmarsat-4 satellite constellation. During the migration manual intervention on Inmarsat Ship Earth Stations may be necessary. After each phase of the migration the coverage area of these GMDSS services will change.

The UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency will increase its fees for the first time in over ten years, in order to be flexible to invest further in the services it provides to the maritime sector. Namely, from 13 November 2018, the UK MCA will increase most of its fees across the UK.

Five foreign-flagged ships were under detention in UK ports during September 2018 after failing PSC, according to MCA. During September, there were two new detentions, while three vessels remained under detention from previous months. Three vessels remained under detention at the end of September.

In its latest safety digest, UK MCA highlights the danger of the carbon monoxide. UK MCA presents an incident where two people on board an inland waterways motor cruiser died due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide from the wet exhaust probably entered the accommodation through gaps.

The UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency informed of two serious and potentially near fatal accidental CO2 releases on UK ships in the last two years. In both cases the CO2 leaked from the manifold into the CO2 room. UK MCA reminds operators that CO2 is highly asphyxiating.
