Read moreSovcomflot selected the dual-fuel MAN 51/60DF engine for an LNG carrier program The largest Russian ship owner, Sovcomflot, recently selected the dual-fuel MAN 51/60DF engine for an LNG carrier program, consisting of two confirmed vessels with an option for two more vessels.The dual-fuel diesel electric propulsion system and the MAN 51/60DF engine have been selected to provide the vessels with a highly efficient and low emissions propulsion system, especially when running in gas mode. A high degree of redundancy and the MAN 51/60 DF engine's multiple fueling options have been also taken into account.The vessels are currently under construction at STX Offshore & Shipbuilding in South Korea and will each be driven by sets of two 8L and two 9L51/60DF engines. The engines will be built at MAN Diesel & Turbo's Augsburg plant in Germany with delivery to the Korean yard due in the fourth quarter of 2012. The first vessel is subsequently expected to begin commercial operation in the fourth quarter of 2013.The new 51/60DF orders mark another major milestone in MAN Diesel & Turbo's strategy of expanding its environmentally-friendly dual-fuel-engine technology into the marine sector. Russian PM Vladimir Putin and other high government and business officials took part in the ceremony.The vessel is designed for geophysical exploration on the continental shelf of the Arctic and sub-Arctic seas, operating in harsh weather and ice conditions.The ship is named after a prominent Soviet and Russian actor VyacheslavTikhonov, a recipient of numerous state awards, including the titles of People's Artist of the USSR. His unforgettable roles, especially the most famous acting as a Soviet spy Stirlitz in the TV series "Seventeen Moments of Spring", are very well known in the country.Immediately after the ceremony Vyacheslav Tikhonov started working under contract - seismic exploration work for the Tuapse Trough Project on behalf of OAO NK Rosneft and ExxonMobil.
