Port of LA advances clean-energy solar power projects

 The Port of Los Angeles has entered a long-term agreement with Hecate Energy Harborside LLC to build, operate, and maintain photovoltaic (PV) solar power systems (PV Systems) that will generate electricity at multiple site locations within the Port. The PV Systems will feed clean energy to the utility grid operated by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP)."This solar project is a perfect example of our city departments doing their part to adopt my Sustainable City plan," said Mayor Eric Garcetti. "Sustainability must be a value shared across departments, industries, and neighborhoods, and I'm very proud to see the Port of Los Angeles investing in the Harbor Area's sustained health with renewable power sources." The agreement supports the Port’s larger goals under the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP) to expand the use of clean energy and related infrastructure while continuing to improve air quality throughout Southern California. Eco Marine Power granted patent for Aquarius MRE System

 Eco Marine Power (EMP) has been granted a patent in Japan related to its Aquarius Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) System – an innovative wind & solar power solution for ships. Solar power pilot project at Nhava Sheva by DP World

A capacity of 3,000 watts DP World has launched a pilot solar power system at Nhava Sheva port in Mumbai.The solar power system has a capacity of 3,000 watts and has been set up at the engineering workshop within the DP World Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT) at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port.With the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide, the pilot solar power system will reduce the terminal's annual power consumption by around 14,000 kWh."This solar power system will actively reduce greenhouse gas emissions at our marine terminal and help in cutting operational costs and contribute towards maintaining a cleaner environment," said Alpesh Sharma, ceo of DP World Nhava Sheva.Source: DP World

Solar power assisted car carrier to test hybrid power system

Aiming to cut CO2 emissions NYK Line's solar-power-assisted car carrier Auriga Leader (60,213 gross tons) will in June be used for shipboard tests of a newly developed hybrid power supply. The car carrier will also be fitted with a ballast-water management system and adapted to use low-sulfur fuel.The power generation and endurance of the photovoltaic panels on Auriga Leader have been undergoing shipboard tests since the completion of the vessel on December 19, 2008. The tests have shown that providing a stable power supply from the photovoltaic panels is difficult because even a slight change in the weather has a significant influence on the amount of power generated.It was also found that attempting to make the solar power system bigger to gain more output and to increase its dependibilty could present problems with regard to stable operations because of fluctuations in the power supply.The hybrid power supply system which is mow being installed has been studied since fiscal 2009.
