North P&I Club advises operators to be aware of the potentially severe consequences of poorly maintained or overloaded on-board generators being unable to meet the electrical demands of ships at sea. The warning comes in the latest issue of the club’s loss prevention newsletter Signals.

North P&I Club warns operators that despite the enormous benefits of digital technology on and around ships, there may also be some downsides. In addition to its recent warning on cyber threats, the club highlights some less obvious risks from the digital age in the latest issue of its loss prevention newsletter Signals - including video calls, emails, mobile devices and even 3D printing.

The North P&I Club says shipowners and operators should be prepared for a new 'raft' of regulations relating to cyber security. As well as compromising vessel safety, a lack of on-board firewalls and other cyber security measures could soon expose shipowners to heavy fines and penalties, according to an article co-authored with Clyde & Co partner Joe Walsh in the latest issue of the Club's loss prevention newsletter Signals.Norths deputy director of loss prevention Colin Gillespie says, The safe operation of ships is increasingly dependent on sophisticated electronic systems, so it is vital these systems are properly secured and protected from external risks. According to the Club, the US Coast Guards new cyber strategy also looks set to be a catalyst for new national and international regulations relating to cyber security on ships. The US Coast Guard published its cyber strategy in June this year in response to what it perceives is one of the most serious threats to US economic and national security interests, says Gillespie. The International Maritime Organization has also now recognised the threat to global maritime safety and commerce, and is expected to review industry guidelines at it maritime safety committee in May next year. The North P&I Club launched a new campaign for 2014 aimed at reminding members of the importance of providing high quality healthcare while avoiding excessive medical costs, the club said. An information sheet entitled 'People Claims: Controlling the Cost' is being circulated to all entered ships and members' offices this week with the latest issue of the club's loss prevention newsletter Signals.

Shipowners need to ensure they have the right garbage-disposal procedures and policies in place The 'A' rated 170 million GT North P&I Club has reminded its Members that 2013 is the first full year of operation of new international garbage-disposal rules that greatly limit the dumping of garbage at sea. The reminder comes in the latest issue of the Club's loss prevention newsletter Signals, published on January 16, 2013 .According to North's loss prevention manager Andrew Glen, 'With very few specific exceptions, the new rules reverse the historical presumption that most garbage can be discharged at a suitable distance offshore.
