On August 4th, Korean Samsung Heavy Industries announced the launch of Safety Master Plan, a new plan aiming to enhance safety, after the fatal crane collapse in May. The Plan involves initiatives and detailed roadmap to establish Geoje shipyard as the world's safest shipyard by 2018.

Italian Fincantieri’s plan to acquire a majority stake in STX France was thwarted, after the country's new government decided to temporarily nationalise the shipyard. The goal of this decision is to defend France's strategic interests in shipbuilding, as Saint-Nazaire shipyards are "a unique industrial tool in France." 

A significant rise on vessel orders is expected in South Korean shipyards, during the second half of 2017, as numerous contracts are to be signed soon. According to earlier data, 79 ships- or 2.83 million compensated gross tons- were secured during the first half of 2017, which also represents a rise from previous year.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration announced it will make available $9.8 million in Federal funding to support capital improvements and employee training at small U.S. shipyards. The grants, provided through the Small Shipyard Grant Program, aim in a modernization of operations, efficiency improvement and a highly skilled workforce.

Samsung Heavy industries announced that construction operations are about to restart partially, six days after the fatal crane accident on the Geoje shipyard. An inspection conducted on the scene showed that the risk factors had been removed, so a restart of the operations was approved by the government.

Six people were killed and 20 others were injured following the collapse of a crane onto a ship, during construction operations, at a Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard, in Geoje.

The National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia (Bahri) has signed a joint development agreement (JDA) with Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco), Maritime Offshore Limited, a subsidiary of UAE-based oil rig constructor Lamprell, and South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries for establishing a maritime yard at Ras Al Khair in eastern Saudi Arabia.

MARAD, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration, awarded $4.9 million in grants to support capital improvements at nine small shipyards located throughout the United States.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Shipbuilding Group recently signed an alliance focused on preventing worker exposure to electrical, ergonomic, struck-by and slip, trip and fall hazards in shipyards.

A&P Group has welcomed the ''City of Rotterdam'', one of the biggest ships to be affected by Storm Desmond, to its Tyneside yard for repair.
