Wärtsilä announced it will supply an ultra-silent propulsion package for a new research vessel to be built for the Faroe Islands Marine Research Institute, a Faroese Government organisation. The vessel is being built at the MEST shipyard in the Faroes. The order with Wärtsilä was booked in June 2017.

As the fishing vessel Venessa S was approaching Cabbage Tree Island, on 20 June 2017, the engine stopped and propulsion was lost. The skipper restarted the engine after several attempts, however it was too late to avoid striking the bank. Venessa S struck the bank and started taking on water.

Wärtsilä and Flender (Siemens AG, Mechanical Drives) have reached an agreement regarding Wärtsilä’s marine gear box portfolio. With immediate effect, the assembly and testing of the gear boxes will be moved to the Siemens Mechanical Drives facilities in Voerde, Germany.

Rolls-Royce secured an order for delivering its first EPA Tier 4-compliant propulsion systems from its MTU brand to Water Emergency Transportation Authority, for installation in three new catamaran ferries. The first of the three high-speed ferries is expected to enter service on the San Francisco Bay in late 2018.
