MEPC 78 Outcome: IMO makes progress on GHG matters, approving Med Emission Control Area

MEPC 78 was held remotely from 6 to 10 June 2022, and DNV presented the highlights of the meeting, which included the finalization of technical guidelines for the upcoming EEXI, CII and SEEMP regulations; approval of a proposal for a sulphur emission control area (SECA) in the Mediterranean Sea; and further discussions on the revision of the IMO GHG Strategy scheduled for 2023.

Maritime Air Emissions: An overview

While there has been some recent progress in the fight against shipping emissions, there are still serious challenges, relating to cost and lack of compliance with standards, noted Keith B. Letourneau, Partner Maritime, BLANKROME, at the 2022 GREEN4SEA Forum, warning that without mandatory reductions, GHG emissions from the maritime sector could increase between 50-250% by 2050.

European Commission study suggests three short-term measures to reduce shipping emissions

A study led by CE Delft and UMAS, funded by the European Commission, analyzes potential short-term measures listed in the International Maritime Organization’s initial strategy on the reduction of GHG emissions from ships. According to the report, both speed limits and operational efficiency standards will require most ships to decrease their speed if the 2030 CO2-intensity ambition is to be met.
