New Compact Scrubber Aboard Royal Caribbean

Green Tech Marine's new compact exhaust gas scrubber Green Tech Marine's new compact exhaust gas scrubber (GTM R15) has successfully been installed onboard Royal Caribbean International's Liberty of the Seas, while the ship was in continuous service, according to Green Tech Marine. The compact design required no extra space as the scrubber replaced the ship's exhaust silencer. The Norwegian company and Royal Caribbean launched the pilot test to see if the new technology was a viable solution to increasing emissions restrictions.Beyond the efficient removal of SOx and other particles, the GTM R15 claims to provide a number of advantages over other scrubbers, such as its minimal footprint requirement and low weight. It is also energy efficient, requiring virtually no external chemicals and allowing for installation during operation.Installation was completed in four months. Initial testing has been undertaken with the system in full-scale operation and the engine running from 2 to 12.4 MW. The scrubber has produced successful results in both open loop and closed loop using seawater.A preliminary scrubber test was performed shore side in Norway for 11 months. After several visits to analyze the scrubber's performance, Royal Caribbean committed to a pilot test."The small size and low weight of the ...

Scrubbers unreliable, says DFDS

Danish shipowner to question the veracity of the technology used on its fleet DFDS is unlikely to roll out exhaust gas scrubbing systems across its fleet after a spate of problems with a pilot plant installed aboard the ro-ro Ficaria Seaways, formerly Tor Ficaria, has led the Danish shipowner to question the veracity of the technology.According to Per Marzelius, DFDS director sustainability & environment, while the technology has the potential to meet the stringent sulphur emissions rules, there are still too many reliability issues. He told Shipping World & Shipbuilder that the shipowner could only contemplate investing in the technology if it is 100% reliable.DFDS installed an exhaust scrubbing system onboard the vessel in 2009 but since then operating costs have increased by 10% and offers only 60% reliability, he said.Corrosion resulted in the shipowner having to renew some of the vessel's pipework, using composite material, and there has been 'problems scrubbing down to acceptable limits,' Marzelius affirmed.Meanwhile, a report into the financial implications of adopting measures to comply with the looming sulphur emissions directive suggests that scrubbers can be the most cost-efficient option for some vessels operating in ECAs for a 'reasonable amount of time'.In the conclusion to a ...

World’s largest multi-stream scrubber to be installed on Ro-Ro vessel

Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA and Wärtsilä Hamworthy agreement Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA and Wärtsilä Hamworthy have agreed to retrofit one ro-ro vessels with a Krystallon Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS). "Installing Hamworthy Krystallon scrubber unit is a major step in preparing our fleet for the regulatory compliance," says Thamba Rajeevan project manager at Wilh Wilhelmsen ASA."When new, stricter emissions regulations come into force in 2015, our experience with this technology will be a valuable tool for taking the right decisions for the rest of our fleet. In the end, we want to see both a significant savings in emissions and a strong return on investment for the scrubber installation."The systems will remove sulphur and particulates from the exhaust gasses of the vessel's main and auxiliary engines. The multi-stream scrubber system will be the world's largest in order to manage the exhaust gasses produced by the 38 486dwt ro-ro vessel's combined engine power of 28 000kW.The installation will be carried out during the vessel's scheduled intermediate docking in the first quarter of 2013. Following the commissioning a comprehensive third party measurement and verification programme will be carried out until the second quarter of 2014, and is partly funded by the Research Council of ...

Wartsila Hamworthy to install world’s largest multi-stream scrubber

Agreement with Wilh. Wilhelmsen to retrofit their vessel MV Tamesis with a EGCS Wärtsilä Hamworthy, the global leader in complete lifecycle power solutions and integrated systems for the marine markets, today announced an agreement with Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA, the global rolling cargo operator, to retrofit their vessel MV Tamesis with a Krystallon Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS).The systems will remove sulphur and particulates from the exhaust gasses of the vessel's main and auxiliary engines. The multi-stream scrubber system will be the world's largest in order to manage the exhaust gasses produced by the 38,486dwt Mark IV RoRo vessel's combined engine power of 28,000kW.Its installation will prepare MV Tamesis for the upcoming sulphur emissions regulation that comes into force from January 2015, which mandates that vessels must burn fuel with a sulphur content of 0.1% when operating within Emissions Control Areas (ECAs).The installation will be carried out during the vessel's scheduled intermediate docking in the first quarter of 2013. Following the commissioning a comprehensive third party measurement and verification programme will be carried out over two and a half years, and is partly funded by the Research Council of Norway."This is yet another example of the growing market demand for scrubbing ...

Contract for Largest Fully Integrated Scrubber System

Alfa Laval sign agreement with Spliethoff Alfa Laval, a major equipment supplier to the marine industry, has signed a contract with Spliethoff, a leading player in the transport market. It covers the retrofit of a multiple inlet PureSOx exhaust gas cleaning system on board one of Spliethoff's vessels which operates mainly in the North European ECA area.It is the first order received by Alfa Laval for such a multiple inlet system. Since the vessel's engines have a combined rated output of 28 MW, this will be the largest marine scrubbing system ever sold. It can therefore be seen as a step forward in preparing the maritime transport industry for the stringent environmental requirements that will take effect from 2015.The system is the first to utilize just one scrubber to clean the exhaust gases for the main as well as the auxiliary engines. René Diks, Manager, Marketing & Sales, Exhaust Gas Cleaning, Alfa Laval: "For the retrofit market, where space and weight are critical issues, it is essential to be able to supply a single scrubber that handles exhaust gases from all the ship's engines. Other advantages include lower energy consumption, less piping and lower maintenance costs."Alfa Laval already has another ...

Algoma Central Corporation has chosen Wärtsilä to supply complete propulsion systems

With integrated scrubbers for six Great Lakes vessels The full propulsion system with integrated fresh water scrubber lowers operating costs while reducing the vessel's environmental footprint by allowing owners to use high sulphur fuels in Emission Control Area (ECA) Zones and meet sulphur emissions restrictions. This represents the first order for the new integrated Wärtsilä scrubber concept. Once in operation, the vessels will set new standards for environmentally sustainable shipping on the Great Lakes and for cargo vessels in general.Wärtsilä has been awarded the contract to supply fresh water integrated scrubbers for a series of six vessels with an option for a further two, being built to transport bulk commodities on North America's Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway, for the Canadian owner, Algoma Central Corporation. The integrated scrubber order is the last one of a series of Wärtsilä supply contracts awarded for these vessels. In addition to the unique integrated scrubber system, the complete solution provided by Wärtsilä includes engineering support, highly fuel efficient engines, propulsion machinery and a bilge water system. The orders for these various systems were booked on an incremental basis in 2011. All equipment included in the Wärtsilä solution will be supplied in co-operation with the ...
