The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) has recently published two Marine Notices which, amongst other things, supports open loop scrubbers and discusses procedures to be followed in the case of compliant fuel non-availability after 2020.

Japanese shipping entity Ocean Network Express (ONE) has decided to install scrubbers on up to 10 vessels in early 2020, in a bid to comply with 2020 sulphur cap, the company's CEO was quoted as saying during an event in Singapore this week.

During the last GREEN4SEA Conference, Mr. Christopher Fee, General Manager – Environment and Sustainability, Oldendorff Carriers presented experience feedback from the use of scrubbers so far. Specifically, Mr. Fee attempted to debunk the myth that these systems harm the environment.

Yara Marine Technologies announced the successful installation of an inline hybrid scrubber system for an undisclosed customer in the ultra-large container segment, as it it the biggest ship engine ever to be successfully fitted with an inline hybrid scrubber system.

Scorpio Bulkers announced that it has reached agreements with certain lenders to increase some of the current credit facilities by a total of $41 million to finance the installation of exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers) on certain of its ships. The additional amounts will be drawn upon the installation of the scrubbers on these vessels, and are structured as upsizings of existing credit facilities.

Netherlands-based Visser Shipping has signed a contract to outfit three container ships with scrubbers from Value Maritime, with an option for a fourth scrubber. The company's fleet provides container transport throughout Northwest Europe.

Finnish technology provider Valmet said it will supply scrubbers for seven new building container vessels, to be built by DSME for South Korean shipping company Hyundai Merchant Marine. The container ships will be the largest in the world, with over 23,000 TEUs each. 

South Korean major shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries announced that its newly spun-off company Hyundai Global Services, specializing in providing total marine services, has signed a MoU with compatriot shipping company KSS Line, for entering into eco-friendly ship business.

On 27 March, the Baltic Index Council announced its decision on the implications of the IMO 2020 Sulphur Cap for the Baltic Exchange’s timecharter indices. Namely, the Baltic will be adding clarificatory wording to its Capesize, Panamax, Supramax and Handysize vessel descriptions to confirm that the index vessels are not scrubber-fitted. The clarified vessel descriptions will enter into force from 1 April 2019. 

With IMO 2020 sulphur cap implementation date approaching, the overall number of scrubber orders for containerships increased to more than 540 units, according to Alphaliner. The orders have increased since Alphaliner's last survey in November.
