With IMO 2020 sulphur cap implementation date approaching, the overall number of scrubber orders for containerships increased to more than 540 units, according to Alphaliner. The orders have increased since Alphaliner's last survey in November.

CMA CGM ordered 10 15.000 TEUs container ships. Five of them fuelled by LNG, and five with scrubbers, from China State Shipbuilding Corporation.The vessels will be delivered from 2021, to replace 10 other vessels. They will also be used on the Asia-Mediterranean lines.

The tanker loaded the low-sulphur fuel from Antwerp and is expected to reach Malta on March 20, Then it will probably transfer the fuel onto the ultra large crude carrier via ship-to-ship operation.

Japanese NYK announced it has secured a 9 billion yen syndicated loan agreement with MUFG Bank Ltd., with the aim to install scrubbers. This forms part of NYK’s medium-term management plan, which includes the group’s intent to integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives into management.

Swedish tanker owner Stena Bulk announced it has made a major investment in scrubbers and will have 16 units installed before January 2020, on a total of 10 IMOIIMAXes, 5 Suezmaxes and one of standard MR. The move is part of the company's plans to comply with the 2020 sulphur cap.

According to IBIA, a full review of the 2015 Guidelines on Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems needs more time, as only elements regarding malfunction of the EGCS system or a monitoring instrument have been sent for approval by the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee in May. MEPC 74 will also discuss about ways to address any potential environmental impact of scrubber discharges to water.

While speaking at the last SAFETY4SEA Conference in Cyprus, Mr. Ioannis Efstratiou, Senior Marine Surveyor, Cyprus Shipping Deputy Ministry, shared his predictions on the maritime landscape in the near future, focusing on the environmental challenges relating to 2020 sulphur cap, GHG emissions, ship dismantling and BWM regulations.

During the 2019 SAFETY4SEA Conference, Mr. Dimitrios Ioannis Kalfas, Engineering Team Leader, Argo Navis, insisted on proper and timely planning for a BWTS or a scrubber retrofit as the best way to deal with the developing industry bottleneck. He also outlined a series of retrofit Pain Points which can set calendars back during planning, such as class approval, owner supplied items, yards and transportation of equipment.
