Seven seamen of cargo ship Florence were rescued

After Coast Guard picks up emergency beackon signal Falmouth Coastguard have been working with coastguard colleagues in Spain, France and the USA during the early hours of this morning to assist the crew of a small cargo ship, Florece which was in collision with the chemical tanker Afrodite.The incident happened at 3.30 this morning. Following the collision, the crew of the cargo ship took to their liferafts, whilst their ship sank. The chemical tanker sustained little damage and was not taking water. All seven crew, who are a mixture of Russian, Polish and Ukranian nationalities, have been rescued by a container vessel Ocean Titan .Falmouth Coastguard were alerted to the plight of the crew when the emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) was set off as their vessel began to sink.The Florece was 240 miles south-south-west of Lands End at the time of the incident and was therefore within the UKs search and rescue region. Falmouth Coastguard used long range information tracking to locate the nearest ship to the position given. Moroccan navy rescued 53 people on board a stricken vessel The United Nations refugee agency said it has received information that the Moroccan navy rescued 53 people on board a stricken vessel in the Mediterranean Sea, adding that four people were found dead in the boat, while at least one person is known to have drowned.The boat was found a few kilometres offshore from the town of Dar Kebdani in northern Morocco last week, according to Melissa Fleming, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva.Among the passengers were several children under the age of 10 and a number of pregnant women. The dead included a Congolese woman and her daughter, who were identified in the morgue by UNHCR staff. They were both registered refugees. The passengers said that a Congolese refugee, a young man, is known to have drowned, but has not been recovered.In a separate incident, two boats carrying 80 people which set sail from Greece were rescued by the Italian coastguard yesterday after a week at sea. They are all safe and sound The research vessel Atlantis, operated by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), rescued 93 Egyptians aboard a disabled fishing boat in the Mediterranean Sea late Friday night (Nov. 25).Atlantis was commencing an oceanographic research expedition, steaming toward its first study site, when it was diverted by a mayday call at 9 p.m. from a fishing boat that was relayed to all nearby ships by the Greek Coast Guard. Collided in waters off Nagasaki Prefecture early Sunday A Japanese fishing boat and a South Korean cargo ship collided in waters off Nagasaki Prefecture early Sunday, leaving one Japanese crew member missing, the Japan Coast Guard said.According to the coast guard, the two boats collided at about 5:30 a.m. in the Tsushima Strait about 60 kilometers east of Tsushima, NTV reported. The 16-ton Japanese squid fishing vessel, the No. 18 Kairyo Maru-with a two-man crew-was almost cut in half by the 1,416-ton cargo ship and capsized, a coast guard official was quoted as saying.Both crew members of the Kairyo Maru were thrown into the water, NTV reported. Korean freighter sank in the South China Sea two days ago Hong Kong and Vietnamese rescue teams are still searching for six missing crew of a Korean freighter which sank in the South China Sea two days ago.The 15,000-tonne bulk carrier Bright Ruby with a crew of 21 - nine Koreans and 12 Burmese - was carrying a cargo of steel from the Malaysian port of Penang to Rizhao in Shandong when it went down 340 nautical miles south of Hong Kong.A spokesman for the Hong Kong Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre of the Marine Department said it first received distress calls from the South Korean-owned bulk carrier about 3pm two days ago.The Government Flying Service sent three fixed-wing aircraft to the scene.
