Work to identify a vessel responsible for pharmaceutical bottles washing ashore along the South African east coast from Gqeberha through to nearby north eastern towns on the Indian Ocean coastline, is actively being investigated, says the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA).

A total 15-member crew were successfully rescued off South Africa’s southern Cape seas on the afternoon of 12 September after their vessel, an offshore supply vessel caught on fire and had to be abandoned. 

According to the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), an oil spill from a cargo vessel in Algoa Bay at the weekend, and which has since been confirmed to have affected local wildlife, continues to be investigated, even as its spread at sea and along local beaches seems limited.

The search continues for cargo containers lost overboard from several vessels off South Africa's Indian Ocean corridor in the past month. 

The salvage operation for the grounded and wrecked Panama-flagged cargo vessel, MV Ultra Galaxy, off South Africa's west coast has entered the wreck removal phase.

According to the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), over 200 people are being mobilized to enhance the cleanup effort of oil from the stranded MV Ultra Galaxy cargo vessel. Recent wintry and stormy weather along South Africa's west coast has further shattered the wreck.

Adverse weather conditions impacting South Africa this past week have led to yet another large container vessel losing as many as 99 containers off the east coast of South Africa, according to the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA).

Coastal clean-up efforts are intensifying along South Africa’s west coast following an oil spill caused by the breakup of the MV Ultra Galaxy, a Panama-registered general cargo vessel.

Salvage work on the grounded Panama-flagged general cargo vessel, MV Ultra Galaxy, beached on its side in a remote area of South Africa’s west coast since early July, has taken another turn after the vessel broke apart due to yet another spell of a stormy wintry weather at the weekend, leading to an oil spillage, SAMSA reported on Sunday.

Efforts are underway to locate over three dozen containers lost at sea from the CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin while sailing near South Africa.
