Rolls-Royce to supply DP3 to Farstad Shipping

Rolls-Royce has signed a contract with the shipyard group Vard for its latest DP3 dynamic positioning system to be installed on two new offshore construction vessels. Dynamic positioning (DP) control systems allow vessels to be held in exact position, when anchoring is not possible, by using satellite technology to enable automatic control of the vessel's thrusters. DP systems with classification 3 are the most advanced defined by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), and this is the first Rolls-Royce contract for DP3. Vessels constructed to DP3 standards are able to operate in very demanding situations where any loss of position has the potential to result in fatal accidents, severe pollution or damage with major economic consequences. Arnt-Ove Austnes, Rolls-Royce, Sales Manager - Automation and Control, said: "We are very happy that Farstad Shipping is the first owner to select our DP3 system. Farstad is an important partner for Rolls-Royce in the continuous development of automation systems. "An increasing number of offshore operations are performed with rigs and vessels having to be kept in precise position without using anchoring systems. With an increased focus on risk limitation in the oil and gas sector, we expect a growing demand for DP3 classed vessels." ...

Rolls-Royce develops offshore vessel for Island Offshore

Rolls-Royce has won an order to provide integrated design and ship equipment for a highly innovative offshore vessel for Norwegian ship owner Island Offshore. The new UT 777 design has been developed in close cooperation with Island Offshore, to be used in offshore drilling operations during harsh weather conditions. The vessel will be built in Japan by Kawasaki Heavy Industries and is scheduled for delivery in 2017. The contract is worth around £25 million to Rolls-Royce. John Knudsen, Rolls-Royce, President - Offshore said: "This new design is based on many years of operating experience, especially from the vessel Island Wellserver which we designed in 2005. The UT 777 will be unlike anything seen before, and marks the latest chapter in the story of the Rolls-Royce UT Design vessels which have been pioneering oil and gas exploration for the past 40 years." The new vessel is designed to undertake a variety of subsea tasks, including Top Hole Drilling, Subsea Construction and Inspection, and Maintenance and Repair Work in deep waters. It can also be adapted to undertake light Well Intervention. Håvard Ulstein, CEO of Island Offshore said: "We are excited about building another game changer in the offshore market. Khalifa Port expands capacity with new cranes

Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) and Abu Dhabi Terminals (ADT) the container terminal operator, have announced today the arrival of three of the world's largest and most modern ship-to-shore (STS) quay cranes at Khalifa Port. The Super Post Panamax quay cranes, which were delivered on Friday, 10 January, were produced by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co. Ltd. in China with a cost of 28 million USD, and travelled overseas on especially built ships to Khalifa Port's container terminal, the first semi-automated container terminal in the region. One STS crane is 126.5 meters high and weighs 1,932 tons. It has an outreach of 65 meters (22 containers) and a lifting capacity of 90 tons. The three new quay cranes will join the six already operational cranes at Khalifa Port's current 2.5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit) capacity container terminal, making it a total of nine STS cranes. In addition, six cutting edge automated stacking cranes (ASC) have recently joined the former 30 ASCs at Khalifa Port, and a further six are expected to arrive later in Q1, both batches representing an overall investment of 42 million USD. Commenting on the recent deliveries, Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, CEO, ADPC, said: "After more ...

GAO issues report re permitting of air emissions on Alaska

GAO has issued a report on the status of regulatory activities and permitting of air emissions on Alaska's outer continental shelf (OCS) as follows: Air emissions from certain oil and gas related operations on the outer continental shelf (OCS), such as from oil and gas exploration, development, and production, are subject to one of two different regulatory programs, depending on the location of the operation. Operations are regulated by either the Department of the Interior or the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). According to a Congressional Research Service report, Interior and EPA's regulatory programs have fundamental differences, in part because they stem from different statutory authorities. Interior's authority is based on the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act of 1953, as amended, which has a goal of offshore energy development and also requires Interior to issue and amend as necessary regulations for compliance with certain national ambient air quality standards to the extent that offshore energy activities significantly affect the air quality of any state. EPA's authority is based on the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, which focus on air quality. Interior has jurisdiction over air emissions from operations on the OCS in the western Gulf of Mexico and most of the central Gulf. Additionally, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2012, amended the Clean Air ...

DNV GL supports growing momentum to LNG as Ship Fuel

A groundswell of momentum is building in the US around the use of LNG as ship fuel as owners, ports and regulators, have realised the benefits of this emerging technology. "It used to be said that LNG was a chicken or egg problem," says Paal Johansen, who leads DNV GL's maritime business in the Americas, "but now it is looking as if we not only have the egg, but the chicken and the henhouse too. As we see this trend grow, DNV GL is working to ensure that owners can be confident that not only the technology their vessels need has been vetted, but that the supporting infrastructure and operational practices are well established." A combination of rising bunker prices, environmental awareness and regulations, growth in production and developing infrastructure have served as the tipping point which could see LNG establish itself as a viable primary fuel for commercial vessels in the US. "The US has tremendous natural gas resources, especially from unconventional sources, and production hit the highest levels on record in August 2013. Utilising this resource addresses the key concern in shipping - the rising cost of fuel oil, while at the same time reducing the industry's impact ...

Marine Response Alliance Launches Fire-Fighting Data App

Marine Response Alliance (MRA), an association of the top U.S. emergency responders providing OPA 90 Salvage Marine Firefighting (SMFF), has launched an exclusive mobile app, providing ship owners/operators, qualified individuals (QIs) and the U.S. Coast Guard with immediate access to the MRA's resources for Salvage Marine Fire Fighting as per OPA 90 compliance as well as the ability to report incidents throughTITAN Salvage (MRA partner) around the world. The OPA 90 SMFF app allows users to report an incident, have direct dial access to worldwide offices, and obtain immediate access to a secure password protected database of registered vessel documents, pre-fire plans and certificates online, which can then be saved in the user's offline documents. The user can review MRA's geographic specific appendices, request drills, see salvage news and receive regulatory updates. "With the OPA 90 SMFF app, the user has easy access to immediate response capabilities anywhere, anytime," said Lindsay Malen, director of business development for MRA and TITAN.  "As a responder the user can download vessel documents while headed to a casualty or the USCG can quickly access the plan holders Funding Agreement to ensure compliance. This is just another way the MRA is making these requirements time ...
