Panama Canal announced that, in February 2017, set a new daily tonnage record of 1.18 million Panama Canal tons, after welcoming a total of 1,180 vessels through both the Expanded and original locks. The previous record was established the month prior, in January 2017, when the Canal recorded a daily tonnage average of 1.16 PC/UMS.

In an exclusive interview with GREEN4SEA, Mr. Alexis Rodriguez, Panama Canal’s Environmental Protection Specialist, talks about Canal's Green Route strategy which consists of many initiatives encouraging operators to enhance environmental performance in the industry. Mr Rodriguez says that with the implementation of these green practices, the Panama Canal expects a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions and reveals further projects on the pipeline which will additionally contribute to sustainability and energy efficiency.

In January 2017, the Panama Canal set a new monthly tonnage record of 36.1 million Panama Canal tons (PC/UMS), with the transit of 1,260 ships through both the Expanded and original locks.

Less than six months after the inauguration of the Expanded Panama Canal, the waterway has welcomed its 500th transit of a Neopanamax ship, highlighting the trust that Canal customers have placed in the route.

The LGC NCOE staff delivered a three-day Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) training seminar to the Panama Canal which covered the chemical and physical properties of LNG, to include flammability, LEL, compression and cryogenic characteristics, and the general arrangement of LNG Carriers and their safety systems and cargo operations

During MEPC 70, Panama Canal Authority presented the efforts of Canal's Green Route Strategy and how it contributes to customers' positive initiatives and technical measures to help reduce their carbon dioxide and GHG emissions.
