MacGregor secured deck equipment contract

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has secured deck equipment contract for a series of eight 58,500 dwt bulk carriers under construction at New Times Shipbuilding in China. The comprehensive order package includes MacGregor VDF electric cranes which are accurate and energy efficient in operation and can save up to 35% of energy. The vessels are being built for Lemissoler Navigation (Front Marine), based in Cyprus, with the delivery of the first two vessels scheduled to start around August 2015. The contract will see MacGregor deliver complete equipment packages comprising electric pole-changing winches, steering gear, air compressors, hatch covers and variable frequency drive (VFD) electric cranes, four per ship. The packages include equipment from combined MacGregor Hatlapa portfolio."The new contract was won as a direct result of our strengthened capability for larger delivery scope and a long standing relationship with the owner," says Jörg Tollmien, Head of Sales for Hatlapa offering at MacGregor. "It is also a good example of what our combined product ranges can offer customers, particularly in cases such as this where an extensive scope of deck equipment is required for multiple ships," Mr Tollmien notes. Kongsberg chosen for 10 Petrobras pipelaying newbuilds

Kongsberg Maritime has been chosen to deliver substantial technology packages for ten new pipelaying vessels ordered by Brazilian multinational energy corporation, Petrobras. In contracts valued approx. NOK 118 Million, the scope of supply includes Kongsberg Maritime's offshore vessel technology including Dynamic Positioning (DP), position reference systems, propulsion control and automation. Six 550-tonne laying tension capacity pipelayers will be built at IHC Merwede in The Netherlands for delivery in 2015 and 2016. Three of the vessels, for Subsea 7, are identical designs to the recently launched 'Seven Waves', and will feature the same K-POS DP22 dual redundant DP system including HiPAP acoustic positioning system and other position reference systems from Kongsberg Maritime. Kongsberg Maritime's Thruster Control and Vessel Management Systems will also be supplied. These 145.9m long, 29.9m wide vessels will engage in transportation and installation of flexible flowlines and umbilicals in water depths up to 3,000m. The other three vessels to be built at IHC Merwede will be operated by Seabras Sapura, the partnership between SapuraKencana and Seadrill. KR launches hull structure analysis software in accordance with CSR-H

The Korean Register (KR) - an IACS member classification society - announces the release of SeaTrust-HullScan, its ground-breaking software solution to analyze and appraise a vessel's hull structure in accordance with the new harmonized common structural rules (CSR-H). SeaTrust-HullScan is a brand new ship design support program that enables ship designers and ship builders to accurately apply IACS CSR-H and all subsequent amendments when designing and constructing a vessel. The software optimizes a ship's design structure by implementing an accurate calculation according to the new rules and generating results that are as close as possible to the target standards set by the user. Automatic modeling in fine mesh analysis and fatigue strength assessment offers enhanced modeling speeds and improved design. Rule loading, corrosion additions and boundary conditions are three basic elements for carrying out direct strength assessments and these are automatically generated. Automation of the entire process leads to a faster integration of the buckling assessment which dramatically saves time and resources. SeaTrust-HullScan was developed in-house and has been rigorously verified with the major Korean shipyards from joint industry projects. It has already won support from the industry for its outstanding user friendliness. The new software is offered in basic ...

TOTE, NASSCO to construct LNG-powered containership

Fireworks marked the first cut of steel in a ceremony last night as construction of TOTE, Inc.'s new Marlin Class, the first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered containership in the world, began at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego, Calif. "These ships, will be the most advanced, environmentally progressive vessels of their kind," state Representative Duncan Hunter (R-CA), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation said, "but they also represent $350 million in U.S. investment, 600 American shipyard jobs, and the bright future of the indispensable domestic maritime industry." TOTE's back to back announcements in 2012 - converting its existing RO/RO fleet in Alaska and investing in new containerships for the Puerto Rico trade, began what can only be described as a change of tide in the U.S. maritime industry toward LNG as the new maritime fuel. Clean burning, LNG offers unmatched environmental benefits, reducing emissions below even the world's most stringent standards. The new Marlin class will create a reduction of sulfur dioxide (SOx) emissions by 98 percent, particulate matter (PM) by 99 percent, nitrous oxide (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2) by 71 percent over TOTE's ships currently operating in Puerto Rico. "The ...

OW Bunker, reseller and physical distributor of marine fuel, announced that it has installed a Coriolis Flow Meter on one of its refueling barges in Rotterdam. OW Bunker is the first independent physical fuel distributor to use the technology when supplying customers in the region, as it looks to ensure increased accuracy in measuring the quantity of product delivered. The new technology will be subjected to a rigorous trial period before being offered as a standard feature to customers refueling in Rotterdam. Jens Maul Jørgensen, Director Bunkers, Oldendorff Carriers, a leading German ship owner and customer of OW Bunker, commented: "With fuel accounting for the majority of a vessel's operating costs, it is critical that we are supplied with the right quantity that we have ordered. Clearly technology is the best method to ensure this, and we are pleased to see OW Bunker invest in Coriolis Flow Meters, creating the best possible infrastructure and processes to provide a high quality physical distribution solution. The Coriolis Flow Meter has been installed on the 2009-built double-hulled bunker barge Valsinni, one of the vessels operated by OW Bunker in Rotterdam. The barge has a tank capacity of 3.150 MTS and supplies customers with Low ...
