Construction of five eco- vessels begins at NASSCO

General Dynamics NASSCO and City of San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer today signaled the start of construction of five American Petroleum Tankers at a steel cutting ceremony for the first tanker, the APT-1, at the NASSCO shipyard in San Diego. Joined by General Dynamics NASSCO executive leadership and Mayor Faulconer were representatives from Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, L.P., and Rob Kurz, vice president of Kinder Morgan Terminals and president of KMP subsidiary American Petroleum Tankers. "Today's start of construction ceremony signifies our ongoing relationship with American Petroleum Tankers. NASSCO is pleased to continue our commitment as good environmental stewards by building the most energy-efficient tankers in the Jones Act fleet and in helping to sustain and grow highly-skilled jobs right here in San Diego," said Kevin Graney, vice president and general manager of General Dynamics NASSCO. The APT-1 is the first tanker of a five-tanker contract between General Dynamics NASSCO and American Petroleum Tankers (APT), which calls for the design and construction of five 50,000 deadweight ton, LNG-conversion-ready product carriers with a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity. The 610-foot-long tankers are a new "ECO" design, offering improved fuel efficiency, and include the latest environmental protection features, including a Ballast Water Treatment ...

Next generation short sea shipping

The increasing stress placed on land based logistic networks is driving the search for alternatives. One of the most promising is short sea shipping; therefore researchers at classification society DNV GL have developed "ReVolt", a vessel that is greener, smarter and safer than conventionally fuelled and operated vessels. Autonomous, fully battery powered and highly efficient - "ReVolt" is a new shipping concept that offers a possible solution to the growing need for transport capacity. Instead of using diesel fuel, "ReVolt" is powered by a 3000 kWh battery. This reduces operating costs by minimizing the number of high maintenance parts such as rotational components. The vessel has a range of 100 nautical miles, before the battery needs to be charged. If the energy required for that is harnessed from renewable sources, this would eliminate carbon dioxide emissions. "ReVolt" does not require a crew and therefore goes a long way in tackling one of the shipping industries' weakest links: the safety record. With an average of 900 fatalities per year the mortality rate in shipping is 90 percent higher than in comparable land-based industries. Studies have shown that the majority of these accidents are caused by human error. Unmanned vessels take this ...

MacGregor to perform RoRo conversion for Stena

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has received a contract from Stena North Sea Ltd to convert the 29,800gt RoPax ferry Dieppe Seaways to optimise it for its new route between Dublin and Holyhead in Ireland. The order further strengthens MacGregor's position as the first choice supplier for RoRo conversions and was booked into the second quarter 2014 order intake. MacGregor's RoRo conversion team is no stranger to the vessel, which will be renamed Stena Superfast X, originally altering the ferry in 2008 to suit new operations across the English Channel. Its present needs dictate a return to the vessel's original design. "MacGregor's long relationship and close cooperation with Stena RoRo on previous conversion and newbuilding projects secured the order," says Stefan Wide, Director of RoRo Conversion & Port Solutions at MacGregor. "It shows that our customers appreciate our ability to provide solutions for their vessels not only at the newbuilding stage, but also when the vessels are in operation." MacGregor will supply a complete 'turnkey' delivery of RoRo cargo access equipment which includes the design, hardware and installation of bow doors, a bow ramp, a new watertight door and a stern ramp. The installation will be completed in January 2015. The ...

L-3 SAM supplies Heavy-Lift Jack-Up Vessel

L-3 SAM Electronics announced that it has successfully completed the supply and installation of extensive drive equipment, as well as automation, navigation and positioning systems, on board the Heavy-Lift Jack-Up Vessel (HLJV) Vidar, which is operated by HOCHTIEF Infrastructure GmbH for construction and service support of offshore wind farms. The Vidar is the latest in a series of recently completed offshore turnkey projects undertaken by L-3 SAM Electronics on behalf of leading operators in the world's offshore industry. "Along with thruster manufacturer SCHOTTEL, L-3 SAM Electronics participated in the tripartite consortium headed by Caterpillar Marine/Caterpillar Motoren, which provides 6x MaK 8 M 32 C CCR engines - each rated at 4,000 kW. This consortium already successfully collaborated on drive technology for the earlier Innovation jack-up vessel," said Reinhard Swoboda, senior vice president at L-3 SAM Electronics. "We are extremely proud to complete this major undertaking, which demonstrates our growing involvement with alternative offshore energy markets." Facilities supplied and installed by L-3 SAM Electronics, in addition to all cable engineering work, comprise eco-friendly diesel-electric propulsion systems with four 2,600 kW azimuth thrusters and three 2,500 kW bow thrusters, each driven by asynchronous motors and speed-controlled, low-voltage PWM converters, and powered by ...

Damen delivers first of three seismic chasers

DAMEN announced the delivery of the ‘7-Oceans' to offshore services company Rederij Groen. The vessels have been designed in close cooperation with both Rederij Groen and their customer. The Seismic Research Support Vessel is constructed by Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam, part of Damen Shipyards Group, and the first of a serie of three identical vessels. Charterer Dolphin Geophysical opted for a 35m design from Vestvaerftet in Denmark. This design is even closer to a fishing vessel compared to the two 40m newbuilds Maaskant delivered to Rederij Groen last year. For optimal manoeuvrability two Veth azimuth stern drives (ASD) were chosen. They are each driven by an active front end, frequency controlled electric motor of 500 kW each. Power is generated by three Caterpillar C18 generator sets of 525 kVA. Also a 90 kW electric bow thruster is fitted. Accommodation is arranged for a crew of 6 with extra capacity for 8 service crew. The electronic package complies with an A4 service area, which enables the vessel, in combination with the ICE-class notation, to operate in Artic areas. The deck arrangement is similar to the earlier delivered SRSV's Astra-G and Aquarius-G, which have been proven to be efficient in their first year of ...
