Xeneta issued a survey on the competence between big shipping alliances and smaller lines, stating that, in the current economic conditions, there aren't many shipping lines that can operate entirely on their own, as they cannot provide the required coverage all by themselves, so they enter shipping alliances. However, there must be ways that smaller lines can also offer value.

Xeneta has issued infographic focusing on the mega Ocean Alliance which is due to start operating in April 2017. In particular, CMA-CGM will lead the alliance, made up of China Cosco Shipping, Evergreen Line, and Orient Overseas Container Line, that will offer 40 services on the east-west trades with 498 port calls.

Video illustrates the Ocean Alliance service which offers 17 services on the Asian-Northern Europe, Mediterranean, Red Sea and Middle Eastern trades, and 23 services on the North American trades.

Members of the OCEAN Alliance, COSCO Container Lines, CMA CGM, Evergreen Line and Orient Overseas Container Line, have signed a document entitled the Day One Product, which sets out the proposed OCEAN Alliance’s network, including port rotation for each service loop.

The US Federal Maritime Commission voted to allow the Ocean Alliance, an agreement among France’s CMA CGM, China’s Cosco Group, Hong Kong’s Orient Overseas Container Line and Taipei-based Evergreen Marine, to become effective as of Monday, October 24th, 2016
