ClassNK issues SEEMP certificates

Approval of NYK Line and Semih Sohtorik ClassNK is part of a voluntary SEEMP certification programme Japanese classification society ClassNK has issued its first certification for Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plans (SEEMP). They are for Japanese shipowner NYK Line and Turkish ship management company Semih Sohtorik Management & Agency Inc (SSMA).ClassNK notes that new amendments to Annex VI of the Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) related to reducing the greenhouse gas emissions from ships were adopted at the 62nd session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) in July 2011. NYK’s Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan First to Be Certified

Target of 10% CO2 Reduction NYK's Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan1 (SEEMP) and the company's implementation procedure have been certified by Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) to be in compliance with the IMO Guidelines adopted by MEPC 63, making the company's plan and implementation procedure the first in the world to receive this certificationSEEMP was developed by a specialized working group on greenhouse gas emissions convened by the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) and will incorporate best practices for the fuel efficient operation of ships, such as better speed management throughout a ship's voyage. Such efficiency measures will significantly reduce fuel consumption and, consequently, CO2 emissions.NYK's certification recognizes that its SEEMP complies with the formulation of guidelines adopted at the 63rd session of MEPC (MEPC 63), which was held from February 27 to March 2, 2012. SEEMPs will be mandatory for all ships from January 2013. NYK to Introduce Onboard Broadband Communication System On All Containerships

Aiming to Reduce CO2 Emissions during ship operations NYK has decided to introduce an onboard broadband communication system on all its containerships with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions during ship operations.Onboard tests of the broadband communication system started in October 2010 on various types of vessels, and the results have been studied. When the system is introduced as part of the IBIS (innovative bunker and idle-time saving) project that NYK has implemented on its containerships to achieve optimal economic ship operation, real-time large-volume data communication between land and ships can be achieved. The results of the tests showed that the large volume of assorted data required for reducing CO2 emissions can be obtained in real time.The new system enables the acquisition of more specific weather and sea-current forecast information on board, improves the automatic transmission of ship operation data and ship operation monitoring on land, and speeds up information-sharing and communication between staff on land and on board vessels. Cruise demo for new BWM system

Asuka II to receive the Ecomarine system Japanese companies Sumitomo Electric Industries and NYK Cruises have agreed to install a Sumitomo 'Ecomarine' ultraviolet ballast water management (BWM) system on one of NYK's cruise ships.Asuka II will receive the Ecomarine system in January 2012, and it will undertake demonstration testing of the system, which is under development by Sumitomo Electric. The two companies will cooperate in onboard testing specified by the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments.Ecomarine incorporates filter units originally developed by Sumitomo Electric to separate large plankton and other aquatic organisms. The ballast water management system then eliminates any remaining small organisms with a medium-pressure ultraviolet system. The system has been designed to save power, while providing reliable removal of organisms. It is claimed to offer environmental benefits in comparison to other chemical-free ultraviolet BWM systems. NYK Introduces New Approaches to Reduce Environmental Impact at Eco-Products 2011

Achieving environmental friendly transport NYK made a booth presentation at Eco-Products 2011, one of the largest environmental exhibitions in Japan, which was held from December 15 to 17 at Tokyo Big Sight (Koto-ku, Tokyo). The company exhibited under the theme "Achieving environmental friendly monohakobi (transport)." A total of 181,500 visitors attended the exhibition, with many of them visiting the NYK booth.The display presentation at the booth include vessels equipped with new technologies such as Auriga Leader, NYK's environmental flag ship equipped with solar panels and rechargeable batteries; and a module carrier equipped with an air-lubrication system that reduces the frictional resistance between a vessel's bottom and the seawater by means of bubble power. Major Japanese container lines could merge

Major lines losing too much money in their container divisions The head of Japan's largest shipping line - Mitsui OSK - has said that a merger of the three major Japanese container lines into one entity "could be an option" to their financial problems.Koichi Muto, President of MOL, made the remark amid broad criticism of the way the bigger container lines on the Asia-Europe trades had demonstrated a "lack of self control" that was detrimental to themselves and the industry.Muto said the idea of a merger "could be an option, of course. At the moment there is no such discussion, but we should be flexible in every way". He added: "We roughly studied such a possibility, of course."He mentioned that all the major lines were losing too much money in their container divisions to be sustainable over the long term. Evergreen, NYK and Hanjin Launch a Weekly India-China Service

India China Service - in response to the growing demand in this trade Evergreen Line, NYK Line and Hanjin Shipping have just commenced a new service linking East Asia and India, to be called "India China Service" or ICS. All three carriers said the new string is launched in response to the growing demand in this trade.ICS inaugurated service on October 29 from Pusan. The weekly loop then calls Shanghai, Ningbo, Shekou, Singapore, Nhava Sheva, Pipavav, Colombo, Singapore, Hong Kong and Pusan.The joint service employs five ships of approximately 2,500 TEU - 2,800 TEU. NYK Enhances Measures to Proactively Employ Filipino Seafarers

NYK expands education and training for Filipino senior officers On September 16, a groundbreaking ceremony was held in the presence of NYK president Yasumi Kudo and Transnational Diversified Group (TDG)1 founder and chairman J. Roberto C. Delgado to pray for the safe realization of the expansion of the NYK-TDG Maritime Academy's (NTMA) facilities and the construction of crew training facilities adjacent to the academy. The construction will be completed in 2013, allowing NYK to further expand and develop education and training for Filipino senior officers.NYK and TDG opened NTMA in 2007, prior to the establishment of any similar facility by any other shipping company, for the purpose of education for high-quality seafarers.
