ESL Shipping received the bulk carrier 'Viikki' on September 4. 'Viikki' is an LNG-fueled vessel which, along with its sister ship 'Haaga', will travel to the Baltic Sea via the Northern Sea Route. In addition to ESL Shipping, Cosco, Novatek, Maersk and Sovcomflot have also opted the Northern Sea Route as an alternative shipping route.

The Cosco owned cargo ship 'Tian En' managed to sail out of the Arctic Circle successfully, completing its maiden voyage within the circle. Specifically, the vessel has departed Arctic waters for the French port of Rouen, after having travelled through the Arctic’s Northern Sea Route

After declining fast through July, sea ice extent decline slowed during the first two weeks of August, with a new record September minimum being highly unlikely, the National Snow & Ice Data Center informed. It also informed that the sea ice extent for 2018 falls between the fourth and ninth lowest in the 40-year satellite record.

Maersk will launch the first ever container ship on an Arctic route. Venta Maersk will leave Vladivostok for St. Petersburg later this week, as melting sea ice offers an alternative route to the Suez Canal. The ship will carry frozen fish and will travel through the Northern Sea Route.

Christophe de Margerie, the icebreaking LNG carrier owned and operated by Russian Sovcomflot (SCF Group), has crossed the Northern Sea Route in a new record time for a merchant ship without icebreaker support, during the month of July, the company announced. 

The most vulnerable marine mammals to Arctic shipping are narwhals, or tusked whales, according to a new study from the University of Washington and the University of Alaska Fairbanks. These animals migrate through parts of the Northwest Passage to and from their summertime habitats.

French oil and gas major Total inked an agreement with Russian LNG producer Novatek to acquire a direct working interest of 10% in Arctic LNG 2, the giant LNG project lead by Novatek on the Gydan Peninsula in the north of Siberia. The deal was signed in the presence of the Russian and French Presidents.

In view of the upcoming summer season, Russia’s Northern Fleet has deployed an ecological platoon to clean up the Arctic from scrap metal and crush oil drums, dumped during the last Cold War. For the fourth consecutive year, the team, comprising 30 men from the military units, will head to the island of Kotelny.

The world’s first floating nuclear power plant, the "Akademik Lomonosov", started its voyage on Saturday, 28 of April 2018, from St. Petersburg. "Akademik Lomonosov" will go from St. Petersburg through the Baltic Sea and around Norway to Murmansk. In Murmansk, it will be loaded with nuclear fuel and tested at a few kilometres distance from nearly 300-thousand inhabitants.
