Read moreDetails200 ton vessel with an 11 man crew was arrested The Nigerian Navy personnel in the Maritime Guards Command of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) while on routine patrol of the Lagos anchorage area arrested a vessel, MT Floris carrying 185 tons (about over 200,000 litres) of suspected illegally refined Automative Gas Oil (AGO) on board.The 200 ton vessel with an 11 man crew was arrested in the course of routine checks when the captain could not produce any papers stating the product it was carrying, point of loading and discharge destination.During questioning at the Head Office of NIMASA, the captain of the vessel Mr. Martins Odedele confirmed the illegality of the transaction but claimed that he was an emergency captain and so was unaware of the illegality of the trip until he got to the location.He said "I have been in school for about a year now and just came back last week. I was asked by the owner of the vessel to be the emergency captain and was given the coordinates to get to the location which I accepted inorder to get some money for the family's upkeep. Read moreDetailsNIMASA proposed law which is titled 'Bill on Piracy and Other Unlawful Acts at Sea' In a bid to ensure that its fight against piracy has the backing of the law, Nigeria's apex maritime regulatory authority, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has presented a bill to the National Assembly.The proposed law which is titled 'Bill on Piracy and Other Unlawful Acts at Sea' is aimed at fighting Piracy and armed robbery at sea. The Director General, NIMASA, Mr. Ziakede Patrick Akpobolokemi, disclosed this in a welcome address he presented at a stakeholders' meeting in the Rivers State capital, Port Harcourt.The NIMASA helmsman, represented by the agency Legal Adviser, Mr. Matthew Egbadon, said the bill is expected to provide legal backing to the fight against piracy and other sea criminality and curb the financial losses, which he claimed was in excess of $3 billion. Read moreDetailsDraft Piracy and other Unlawful Acts at Sea Bill The Nigeria MaritimeAdministration andSafety Agency (NIMASA) has presented the Draft Piracy and other Unlawful Acts at Sea Bill to industry stakeholders in Lagos.The draft bill, which relies on the various treaties of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) ratified by Nigeria, is expected to provide a regulatory framework for defining piracy and criminality at sea, prosecuting and punishing criminals.At the event, NIMASA Director-General Mr Ziakede Akpobolokemi, underscored the negative impact of piracy, saying that about $3 billion is lost yearly to sea robbery globally and that Nigeria is a major contributor.The NIMASA boss, who was represented by the Executive Director, Cabotage Service and Labour, Mr Ibrahim Zilani, said: "In a bid to develop a robust legal framework for fighting these incidences on sea, an international conference on piracy was organised by NIMASA in collaboration with the Nigeria Navy."One of the resolutions at that conference was to strengthen existing legal framework.
