DNV GL issues Energy Management Study 2014

Maritime Advisory recently published a new Energy Management Study that reveals potential. "High savings potential is still waiting to be unlocked," is Julia Kühnbaum's conclusion from the recent Energy Management Study she prepared with her team from Shipping Advisory. A year after SEEMPs became mandatory for the shipping industry, the study aimed at understanding in detail how the shipping industry has handled the need to increase energy efficiency in a challenging market environment amid tight budgets. Numerous ship managers, owners and operators running more than 2,000 vessels burning around 25 billion US dollars worth of fuel per year participated in the study. While leading players have reaped energy savings of 10 per cent and more through operational and managerial measures (in addition to slow steaming), and in some cases better charter rates and fleet utilisation, the majority of respondents achieved as little as 1-3 %. Results indicate that these companies focused on SEEMP compliance rather than establishing efficiency throughout their organisations. "There is a lot to learn from industry best practices," concludes Kühnbaum. To get the study in PDF format please send a mail to Julia Kühnbaum. Industry asks DNV GL to explore risks at small scale LNG bunkering and filling stations

In order to better understand the consequences of an accidental liquefied natural gas (LNG) release, DNV GL has been asked by the industry to initiate a Joint Industry Project (JIP). It will be run in collaboration with E&P companies and LNG market stakeholders. The JIP will contribute to the development of rigorous safety standards and guidelines for small scale LNG bunkering and filling stations. Other E&P and energy companies still have time to join the project. LNG is evolving; from large-scale seagoing vessels and large bunkering and regasification plants, towards small-scale use as fuel for road transport and short seagoing vessels. It is an attractive fuel since it offers less emissions, reduced noise levels and competitive prices compared to other conventional bunker fuel like Marine Gas Oil (MGO). DNV GL has already made steps forward to harmonise LNG bunkering operations by launching a Recommmended Practice which provides guidance on how LNG bunkering can be undertaken in a safe and efficient manner. Despite the well established large scale LNG market, challenges remain regarding the development of small scale LNG sector, for example: quality management, material specification, metering and sampling methods and lack of safety standards and guidelines. To address this, regulation ...

Application shows available berths in Rotterdam

Finding a place to berth in the port of Rotterdam, will be an easy task for inland shippers with the soon-to-be-launched ‘Berth Available' app. With this new app shippers will be able to see at a glance which berths are available and which ones are taken. Entrepreneur Léon Gommans came up with the application that combines real-live data on the location of ships from the Automatic Identification System (AIS) with the coordinates of berths in the port of Rotterdam. Gommans recently won the National App Prize with his idea. It is expected that the app will be available in the App Store by October. The app will be based on data from the project ‘Blauwe golf, Verbindend', an initiative of the provinces Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland, Rijkswaterstaat (the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management), the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment and the Port of Rotterdam Authority, which facilitates information exchange between shippers and waterway managers. As of 1 December 2014 an AIS device is mandatory for all vessels on the Rhine. The data from AIS is available as long as shippers and vessels stay anonymous and can be used for maritime purposes only. Source: Port of Rotterdam  In the ...

SPNL hosts meeting on alternative fuels and upcoming regulations

Shipping Professional Network in London (SPNL) hosted another well attended event, sponsored by DNV-GL and held at the UK Chamber of Shipping offices in London. Mr. Martin Crawford-Brunt (UK & Rep of Ireland Manager for DNV-GL) was keynote speaker for this event, covering three main topics: Navigating the raft of upcoming regulations in a cost-effective way Alternative fuels and niche solutions/new technologies Reducing operating expenses to increase competitiveness Martin, responsible for DNV-GL's Maritime business in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, spoke of the challenges of energy efficiency and the shipping industry being prepared to embrace future changes. "I think everybody realises we are entering a challenging decade, looking at the increased number of stricter regulations coming in at a rapid pace and, more importantly, with unclear implementation or enforcement dates. When you look at tonnage oversupply, rising operating costs, global energy prices and the volatility connected to those, together with technology, it has become very difficult to choose what to do and when to do it." Of course the backdrop to this is an increase in tonne miles in global shipping - approximately 4% on a global basis as the world economy grows. There will always be a ...

Greek shipowner orders Green Dolphin 84s design bulk carrier

Greek shipowner W Marine Inc. has ordered a series of post-Panamax bulk carriers based on the Green Dolphin 84S design. The design was developed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI) with support from DNV GL. Managing Diriector of W Marine Inc., Nikolaos Triantafyllakis says: "The aim of the company, in line with the wishes of its founder, Yiannis Sarantitis, is to build up a homogeneous fleet of vessels ranging in size between Panamax to post-Panamax. The addition of the Green Dolphin 84S will substantially enhance the commercial profile of our fleet and give us a competitive edge within that segment of the dry bulk market." The Green Dolphin 84S is the third design in the Green Dolphin series of bulk carriers designed by SDARI, with assistance from DNV GL in the development process. The shallow draft design is able to lift larger cargo lots on a shallower draft which, combined with a fuel efficient design, makes it more efficient in a highly competitive market. W Marine Inc. employed DNV GL to develop the operating profile, analyse the hydrodynamic performance of the hull shape, calculate the propulsion efficiency and estimate the fuel oil consumption. Mr. Triantafyllakis adds: ...

New app helps to report oil spills

The American Littoral Society has unveiled a new smart phone app that empowers citizens to report pollution, algae blooms and biological events such as fish kills in coastal waters. The "Marine Defenders" project was first released in July 2012 and was originally conceived and developed for reporting oil spills. The American Littoral Society expanded the app to allow reporting on a broader variety of pressing issues of concern along the coast, including: algal blooms, jellyfish occurrences; fish kills and endangered injured wildlife; and marine debris. Helen Henderson, Atlantic Coast Program Manager for the Society said, "Our bays and coastal waters are facing a multitude of threats. We are putting this tool into the hands of thousands of people who will be eyes on the water, helping to protect and restore our bays and coast. Oil spills, algae blooms and fish kills need to be identified quickly and responded to. This tool will empower the public to both identify the problems and be part of seeking a solution." The Marine Defenders app is an efficient easy-to-use tool for mariners, both professional and casual, to document and report marine oil spills, marine debris and significant biological impacts. The marine defenders project includes a ...

DNV GL celebrates 5 years of ECO Assistant

One of DNV GL's most widely used software products; ECO Assistant has improved the profitability and sustainability of over 500 vessels across all ship types, with verified fuel savings. Over only half a decade in operation, ECO Assistant has already saved in excess of 150 million dollars in fuel costs, with a resulting reduction in CO2 emissions of 700,000 metric tonnes - the amount of carbon removed from the atmosphere by over 100,000 acres of forest over the same period. Of all the "quick fixes" to optimise energy efficiency on existing vessels, or newbuildings, trim optimisation tools can make the most immediate impact to the bottom line profit of an existing vessel. An easy refit, and payback times of, in most cases, only a few months, can lead to significant savings over the life of a vessel. "When we first presented the potential gains from using ECO Assistant, the initial response was sceptical. Not many believed that the savings we predicted could be true," says Heike Hansen, Team Leader Fluid Engineering at DNV GL. "Within the first year, however, we saw that as we demonstrated the system, its ease of implementation and the demonstrable results we could produce grabbed customer ...
