DNV GL launches new performance management portal

DNV GL introduced ECO Insight, a unique performance management portal to the shipping community at the SMM trade fair in Hamburg. Combined with the new Navigator Insight data collection and logging software, ECO Insight gives shipping companies a fast track to an effective performance management system. "ECO Insight allows our customers to take the next step to greater efficiency. After exploiting measures to improve the vessels, like retrofitting or engine de-rating, many of our customers are taking an intensive look at how their vessels are being operated", says Albrecht Grell, head of DNV GL's Maritime Advisory division. "In order to enhance the way vessels are operated, the natural starting point is to begin to monitor them in a structured way", he adds. The performance management portal ECO Insight provides a comprehensive and easily accessible way to manage the performance of a fleet, including voyage, hull & propeller, engine & systems performance. It enriches customers' own fleet reports with industry data, such as Automatic Identification System (AIS), weather, or fuel, and provides unique benchmarking capabilities. Advanced engineering systems, for example hull fouling prediction, are also packaged into the portal. Navigator Insight, due to a lot of smart plausibility checks against specific vessel particulars, ...

MARAD releases LNG Bunkering study

The Maritime Administration (MARAD) released a comprehensive study examining the options for liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering and the necessary infrastructure, safety, regulatory, and training factors of each in supplying LNG to ships as a propulsion fuel in the maritime sector. Bunkering is the transfer of LNG from a supply station to a receiving vessel for the sole purpose of use as propulsion fuel. The study examines the pros and cons of four bunkering options (truck-to-ship transfer, shore facility-to-ship transfer, ship-to-ship transfer, and transfer of portable tanks) based on factors such as the number and type of vessels to be served, local availability of LNG, port size, congestion and level of activity. 1. Truck-to-Ship (TTS): is the most common method used to support the LNG-fueled ship network, to date. It is the transfer of LNG from a truck's storage tank to a vessel moored to the dock or jetty. Typically, this is undertaken by connecting a flexible hose designed for cryogenic LNG service. A typical LNG tank truck can carry 13,000 gallons of LNG and transfer a complete load in approximately one hour.2. Shore/Pipeline-to-Ship (PTS): LNG is transferred from a fixed storage tank on land through a cryogenic pipeline with a flexible end piece ...

ReCAAP new mobile app launched

In recognition of the advances in information technology, and the importance of timely dissemination of reports, sharing of updated information, and reaching out to a wider shipping community, the ReCAAP ISC has created a Mobile Application ('App'), making the prevailing use of mobile smartphones by many. The 'App' enables the ReCAAP ISC to share the latest Incident Alert and reports promulgated by the ReCAAP ISC with a wider readership from the shipping community and facilitate quick access to updated information of the ReCAAP Focal Points/Contact Point (phone number, fax number, email address). This provides the shipping community timely and better situation awareness, and enables them to make timely reporting of an incident to the nearest ReCAAP Focal Points/Contact Point and submission of an incident report via the App. The Mobile App is available for download in the App Store (iPhone users) and Google Play Store (Android-based smartphone users). Just simply key in "ReCAAP Focal Points" in your search for mobile app and install the app instantly. The ReCAAP ISC would appreciate you to share and promote the App to the members of the shipping community you come in contact with. First Mobile App for Offshore Energy Vessel Management

Telerik announced that its customer in oil and gas industry, Bhagwan Marine, together with partner, Glenfield Digital Group, has released the first mobile app for offshore energy vessel management. The app, LiveFleet, enables customers to track its vast fleet of marine vessels, offering real-time data access and geolocation capabilities. The app is currently available for download on the Apple App Store and Google Play. "Off-shore energy production is a complex and competitive industry. Companies want real-time information about staff, vessels and resources, in a quick and concise manner," said Richard Sojka, Managing Director, Glenfield Digital Group. "The service Bhagwan Marine provides to its many customers is unique. It was the first to leverage mobile with its LiveFleet app, which puts it ahead of its competition." "Thanks to Glenfield Digital and Telerik, we can now have our complete fleet information at our fingertips, updated with real time tracking data directly to any mobile device," said Bhagwan Marine Marketing Manager Matt Syms. "On-the-fly, we can produce print-ready technical vessel specification sheets. DNV GL to class ALP Future Class tugs

DNVGL announced that it congratulates ALP Maritime Services on the development of its next-generation "ALP Future Class" ocean going tugs. The vessels, developed by Ulstein Design & Solutions in close cooperation with ALP Maritime Services (ALP), are SX157 design with a 300-ton bollard pull, capable of operating at full loads for 45 days without refuelling. ALP, which was recently acquired by Teekay Offshore, has contracted Niigata Shipbuilding & Repair yard to build four vessels. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2016. According to Bas Veerman, DNV GL Customer Service Manager (BeNeLux), the "ALP Future Class" vessels have a number of specialised notations. "It was clear from the beginning of the project that ALP was committed to developing a very unique, high-spec design," he says. "In terms of operational performance and flexibility, these vessels are ‘best in class' but also include features to reduce emissions, enhance safety and robustness, and ensure crew comfort over long distances." Leo Leusink, Chief Operation Officer for ALP, says that the 4,250 dwt ocean going tugs have been designed to manage a growing number of ultra-large floating production units now on order. "The growing size of these new offshore floating ...

Damen teams up to develop green passenger ferry

The Dutch nature conservancy board Natuurmonumenten and Damen Shipyards have teamed up to develop a green passenger ferry for a protected island in Holland's big rivers estuary. The island of Tiengemeten, in the Haringvliet basin about 15 kilometers south of the Rotterdam port complex, is currently being served by an out-of-date diesel powered ferry which is due for replacement. In the agreement signed on July 11, Natuurmonumenten and Damen set out to design and build a sustainable craft to transfer visitors to and from the mainland. "We really look forward to this assignment", Jelle Meindertsma, Sales Manager Damen Shipyards enthuses. "One of a ferry's main characteristics is that its route is always the same. Such a predictable sailing pattern offers the ideal starting-point to fine-tune the design, also vis-à-vis optimum sustainability." "We'll start with an empty drawing-board, meaning that possible techniques are still open, to address this specific transportation challenge", Henk Grunstra, Damen's Product Director Public Transport adds. "One must think out of the box to create innovation." Damen Shipyards Group teams up with Dutch nature conservationistsKrijn-Jan Provoost, Natuurmonumenten's Area Director for the Zuid-Holland and Zeeland provinces, notes that managing a ferry link is no core activity for his organization. ...
