Sub-Committee in favor of standard for hull and propeller performance

The 17 National Standardization Bodies represented on ISO’s Marine Environment Protection Sub-committee (ISO-TC8-SC2) have voted in favor of circulating ISO 19030 parts 1 and 2 as Draft International Standards. In anticipation of final approval of the standard expected next year, Jotun will update Performance Guarantees offered as a part of its Hull Performance Solutions so that they are fully compliant with the standard. According to Geir Axel Oftedahl, Jotun’s Business Development Director, Hull Performance Solutions, the purpose of establishing these standards is to prescribe practical methods for measuring changes in ship-specific hull and propeller performance and to define performance indicators for hull and propeller maintenance, repair and retrofit activities. “Poor hull and propeller performance is currently estimated to account for around 10 per cent of world fleet’s energy costs and corresponding greenhouse gas emissions,” he said. “By creating a standard, the industry will have access to proven ways to measure speed loss, leading to better decisions about hull coatings and propellers. We believe improving hull and propeller performance can reduce the world fleet’s fuel cost by as much as $30 billion per year and achieve an estimated 0.3 per cent reduction in man-made greenhouse gas emissions.” The vote represents ...

Speed trial method for EEDI verification

In order to determine the ship's attained EEDI required by MARPOL ANNEX VI, the ship speed in calm sea conditions is to be calculated based on the speed trial results. Since the ISO standard which is prescribed in IMO's guidelines on survey and certification of EEDI as the methods for conduct/analysis of speed trial has been revised recently,  ClassNK has issued Technical Information to provide information on the effective date and relevant requirements of the new standard. Background In MEPC 62 held in July 2011, some issues to the existing ISO15016 (2002 edition) were pointed out by European shipowners and research institutes, and IMO urged ISO and ITTC to review the standard. In response to it, ISO and ITTC commenced their collaborative work at WG17 formed under the umbrella of ISO/TC8/SC6, and developed the draft international standard with the addition of new tidal correction method called "Iterative method", while incorporating the basic concept of ITTC recommended procedure (2012 edition). Following the completion of prescribed procedure within ISO, new ISO standard has been published on 1 April 2015 as ISO15016:2015. Application of ISO15016:2015 In MEPC 68 held in this May, it was agreed to revise the guidelines on survey and ...

ClassNK releases PrimeShip-GREEN/ProSTA

ClassNK  released PrimeShip-GREEN/ProSTA, a software which analyzes and calculates a ship’s speed trial results for EEDI calculation in compliance with the latest IMO Guidelines on 1 May 2015. MARPOL AnnexVI states one parameter to calculate EEDI as the ship’s speed in calm sea conditions based on the speed trial results. To eliminate the effects of external factors during sea trial (wind, waves, current, water depth, sea temperature) and provide a way to analyze and calculate a ship’s speed in calm sea conditions, IMO assigned two methods in its Guidelines on survey and certification of the Energy Efficiency Design Index. Those were ISO 15016:2002 and the International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC) Recommended Procedures. In response to requests from IMO to eliminate this dual standard, ISO and ITTC worked together to create the new harmonized international standard ISO 15016:2015 which was published on 1 April 2015. ISO 15016:2015 will be adopted at this month’s MEPC68 and is expected to apply to all sea trials from June 2015. In addition to providing technical support for standard harmonization, ClassNK has also developed support tools such as PrimeShip-GREEN/ProSTA for shipyards, shipowners, and the greater maritime industry to enable smooth adoption of the amended standard. ...

Capturing freight carbon with new ISO guidelines

With more than half the world's CO2 emissions generated by the transportation sector, a new International Workshop Agreement (IWA) from ISO represents a major step towards reducing emissions from freight transport. As billions of tonnes of goods are shipped around the globe to meet consumers’ seasonal tastes and demands, international freight transport has become increasingly important for worldwide deliveries. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency(EPA), of the 28 % of greenhouse gas emissions produced by the transportation sector, approximately 30 % come from freight. Without action, the threat to the environment may only worsen. The recently published IWA 16 defines the framework for coherent methods to quantify CO2 emissions of freight transport (total and intensity). It provides a gap analysis identifying starting points and recommending further specification and possible alignment on mode-specific and intermodal levels, including transhipment centres and warehouses. According to Dr. Verena Ehrler and Alan Lewis, Chairs of the group that developed IWA 16, the added value of the Agreement is the thorough scientific comparison it makes of currently existing standards against the industry and stakeholder perspective, thus building a valid and practical foundation for the development of a global standard for emissions calculation in freight transport ...

Ultra low sulphur fuel oil and ISO standards

The Skuld P&I Club has issued article to help operators  understand how  ultra low sulphur fuel oil and ISO standards may relate to requirements for a maximum sulphur content of 0.10% in designated ECAs pursuant to MARPOL Annex VI. ISO standards As has been discussed in Skuld's guide to low sulphur fuels, there are a number of different versions of the modern ISO 8127 standards for marine fuels. The first incarnation dates back to 1987, and since then we have had the 1996, 2005, 2010 and the 2012 (5th edition) of the standard. While the 2005 standard is one of the most common, the 2010 has more developed criteria that users may favour but which has at times led to a premium being charged by suppliers in regions where 2005 is the norm. In particular 2010 added the DMZ grade, changed the viscosity standard for DMB and provided specifications for hydrogen sulphide, acid number, oxidation stability and lubricity (which should not be confused with viscosity). It has always been necessary to understand the specifications of any particular ISO standard and to ensure that the right fuel was being ordered for, and supplied to, a given vessel. MARPOL Annex VI Important things ...
