Shipowners will benefit from an energy management strategy using ISO 50001

Lloyds Register at Posidonia With the focus on rising fuel prices, Lloyd's Register provides an effective energy management approach that will help owners identify suitable options and opportunities when choosing technologies, operational parameters and fuel typesIncreasing energy prices, the patchwork of emissions regulation and question marks over untested technology, are all giving shipowners a headache when it comes to making investment decisions. This is true for both retro-fit and newbuild solutions."Clearly, the market is confused by some of the messages out there", comments Katharine Palmer, Lloyd's Register's Environmental Manager. "Obviously, market conditions are not encouraging significant newbuild activity right now but owners are thinking about how they make their fleets more efficient and when they do order new tonnage, they want to be confident in their investment decisions. What is suitable for a Baltic ferry operator is likely to be very different to the requirements of Greek bulk carrier owner."At Posidonia next week Lloyd's Register will be running a series of free mini-seminars throughout the week, on its exhibition stand at the event. These mini-seminars will look at the issues owners need to consider when evaluating investment decisions. For details of timings and a print off of the seminar details, ...

Private security guards needs to be ISO certified

IMO supports an ISO standard for the use of armed guards The International Maritime Organization, IMO, is underway with a requirement that private security firms continue to be ISO certified. It seems to be the result of the efforts of IMO's efforts to clean up the market for private security companies selling protection to piracy threatened merchant ships in the area off Somalia.Pirates' criminal activities have meant that the number of private security firms have grown over the past year. This has led to a situation where individual companies are responsible for the security of crews, ships and cargoes."We obviously support IMO's thoughts on an ISO standard. It is gratifying that the international community takes hold on this and moves quickly, rather than that the individual country authorities would have to make their own certification schemes," says Deputy Director of the Danish Shipowners' Association, Jan Fritz Hansen.Source: The Danish Maritime Magazine

BIMCO – ISO join forces to establish PMSC standards

ISO standard will be available in 2012 as a Publicly Available Specification In a joint submission to the 90th session of IMO's Maritime Safety Committee, BIMCO and ISO explain that work is underway to establish an ISO standard for the accreditation and certification of PMSCs (private maritime security companies) providing contracted armed security personnel (PCASP) on board ships. The new ISO standard will be available in 2012 as a Publicly Available Specification. Because the reputation and recognition of the organisations involved provide essential legitimacy, BIMCO firmly believes that this is the best and swiftest methodology to develop the process through which to audit with the necessary thoroughness. In IMO precedent has been set before with endorsement of ISO standards and it is hoped that IMO will also endorse this new ISO standard and thereby help speedily resolve this complex issue. Government and NGO participation encouragedTerms of reference and a draft framework for the work will be presented to an inaugural meeting in mid-2012 for expert comment and discussion. IMO Member States and observers are encouraged to participate in the process, and several IMO Member States and NGOs have already designated experts to do so. Scope of the new ISO standardUsing the ...

Efforts for safety signs to be recognized throughout the world

New regulation update from Maritime Progress Considerable effort is being expended to make the graphical symbols used within safety signs internationally recognised throughout the world. The meaning of some symbols is not always obvious and often training is required to ensure they are fully understood. Education can be achieved in a number of ways by including graphical symbols in operation manuals, company circulars and training literature as well as by using supplementary text alongside the symbol within the safety sign.Safety Sign DesignThe International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) has been working on International Standard ISO 3864 covering the design of international safety signs for a number of years. The second edition of part 3 of the standard, "Design principles for graphical symbols for use in safety signs" has just been published earlier this year. Parts 1 and 4 of the standard covers the colour and design principles of safety signs, new editions of these parts were published in 2011. The main signs affected are mandatory, some hazard and prohibition signs plus minor changes to safe condition and fire equipment signs. Fortunately ISO has compiled a catalogue of safety signs ISO 7010:2011 this standard is a live list of graphical symbols for ...

RINA to Help Shipowners Save Fuel and Reduce Emissions

Classification society launches range of services to save fuel and reduce emissions International classification society RINA has launched a co-ordinated range of services to help shipowners save fuel and reduce emissions. There are seven different elements to the services which can be adopted individually or as a complete package. The seven services are: auditing to ISO14001 Environmental Management certification; auditing for ISO50001 Energy Management Certification; development of the SEEMP (Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan); EEDI verification; Energy Saving and Energy Conservation Analysis; Fuel Consumption Data Analysis and Decision Support Solutions and tailored energy saving training courses.Andrea Cogliolo, head of innovation, RINA Group, says, "All shipowners need some form of assistance and support to cut energy costs. We have a lot of experience working with major passenger ship owners and others to devise energy saving measures, and we know how to implement the ones that work best. Owners can use our services at the level appropriate to them, from simple compliance through to a major re-engineering of how they use energy on ship and ashore.
