Many Asian shipping companies are ready to embrace the increased capacity and greater data usage enabled by maritime VSAT, according to a recent Marlink survey. Marlink initiated the survey to further deepen its understanding of the Asian markets, align its service development roadmap and ensure the specific needs of Asian operators are met with flexible communication services.

A research conducted by Nautilus International indicated that almost two-thirds of Nautilus members would consider moving to a shipping company which offers better onboard connectivity. The results of the survey of 2,000 seafarers were presented by Nautilus at a workshop organised by Inmarsat at the Crew Connect Europe conference.

North P&I Club urges shipowners to consider the importance of internet access on their ships, to ensure they continue to attract, recruit and retain high quality crews. The issue of internet access, part of a campaign by North to help operators get the ‘right crew’, is detailed in the latest issue of the club’s loss prevention newsletter ‘Signals’.

UK P&I Club highlighted the importance of cyber security at sea, explaining that the use of computerised systems for everything, from navigation to container inspection, has enhanced the safety and security of vessels at sea, but it has also created a new type of threat to the shipping industry – cybercrime.

Inmarsat announced that its maritime connectivity service Fleet Xpress, has been selected by Hong Kong-based Fleet Management Limited (FML), large independent third-party ship manager. The service enhances vessel efficiency, crew welfare and safety, and facilitates ‘connected ship’ applications.

KVH Industries announced that Pacific Basin Shipping Limited has completed the deployment of KVH’s mini-VSAT Broadband solution to support its initiative to modernize ship-shore communications on their entire fleet of owned ships. The new equipment will enhance shore-to-ship crew training and support for safe ship operations and will help to boost morale onboard.

Transas announced that has signed a partnership agreement with Satcom Global to add integrated connectivity to THESIS, its unified platform for digital operations on ships and in shore-based offices. Satcom Global is an established provider of global satellite services to the maritime industry.
