Amendments to the ISM Code to enter into force on January 2015

IMO adopted amendments to the ISM Code through MSC.353(92) The IMO Maritime Safety Committee in its Session 92 adopted amendments to the ISM Code through IMO Resolution MSC.353(92) which shall enter into force on 1 January 2015. The amendments to the ISM Code are as follows:Paragraph 6.2 has been amended requiring the Company to ensure that each ship is:manned with qualified, certificated and medically fit seafarers in accordance with national andinternational requirements and appropriately manned ships in order to encompass all aspects of maintaining safe operationsonboard.A new Paragraph 12.2 has also been adopted requiring the Company to:periodically verify whether all those undertaking delegated ISM-related tasks are acting inconformity with the Company's responsibilities under the CodeThe amended ISM-Code includes various new footnotes with guidelines and recommendations developed by the IMO. IMO MSC 94 meets next week

From 17 to 21 November 2014, IMO Headquarters, London IMO'sMaritime Safety Committee (MSC), which meets at the Organization's London headquarters for its 94th session, from 17 to 21 November 2014, is expected to adopt the Polar Code and related amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) to make it mandatory.The MSC will also have a number of other items on its busy agenda, including approval of the draft SOLAS amendments to make mandatory the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code); further work on its action plan on passenger ship safety; and the consideration of items put forward by the sub-committees.Draft mandatory Polar Code and SOLAS amendments to be considered for adoptionThe MSC will be invited to consider, with a view to adoption, the draft International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (Polar Code), and the proposed draft new SOLAS chapter XIV "Safety measures for ships operating in polar waters", to make the Code (Preamble, Introduction and Part I-A (Safety measures)) mandatory.The draft SOLAS amendments were approved at the last session, with a view to adoption at the current session, along with the Polar Code.The ...

IMO Approval Means Container Weight Verification Will Soon Be a Reality

Approved changes to the Convention will enter into force in July 2016 The Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has approved changes to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention that will require verification of containerweights as a condition for loading packed export containers aboard ships. Misdeclared container weightshave been a long-standing problem for the transportation industry and for governments as they presentsafety hazards for ships, their crews, and other cargo on board, workers in the port facilities handlingcontainers, and on roads. Misdeclaration of container weights also gives rise to Customs concerns.The approved changes to the Convention will enter into force in July 2016 upon final adoption by theMSC in November 2014. In order to assist supply chain participants' and SOLAS Contracting Governments'implementation of the container weight verification requirement, MSC also issued a MSC Circular withimplementation guidelines.The MSC has also approved a new Code of Practice for the Packing of Cargo Transport Units (CTUs),including intermodal shipping containers. The new CTU Code, which will replace the current IMO/ILO/UNECEGuidelines for packing of CTU, has already been approved by the UNECE (United Nations EconomicCommission for Europe) and will now go to the ILO (international Labour organization) for approval. ...

Safe Passage pamphlet launched at IMO Safety Committee

Digests on collision prevention measures, night signals for vessels crossing the passage , guidance On 20 May 2014, a pamphlet entitled Safe Passage: The Straits of Singapore and Malacca was officially launched at the 93rd session of the IMO Maritime Safety Committee meeting currently taking place in London.This Safe Passage pamphlet is the result of an initiative pursued within the Cooperative Mechanism, a framework established in 2007 in which the littoral states of Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore and users of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore (SOMS) pool their respective resources and expertise in an effort to enhance navigational safety and protection of the marine environment in the SOMS.SOMS is a vital sea line of communication, much used by ships voyaging from West to East. Safe navigation and the prevention of collision are crucial in such a busy strait used for international navigation.
