New AVANTI port information software

Live testing of ‘Avanti', a new on-line web based application that provides validated nautical information for port users is due to commence at a number of European ports. Following successful prototype testing at Port of Rotterdam, the ports of Göthenburg, Marseille and Luela will commence live testing in spring 2014. Avanti has been developed by Envitia for the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) in collaboration with the International Harbour Masters' Association (IHMA) and promises to make a major contribution to the rapidly expanding field of e-Navigation. The need for easily accessible and reliable nautical port information has never been more important as all players in the industry aim to increase efficiency, reduce costs and achieve environmental benefits. By securely accessing their port's information on the Avanti website, harbour masters can speedily update port information making it instantly accessible to the marine industry and port community through a website that has been developed by an internationally respected organization. UKHO's Publications Senior Product Manager, Christine Trickett, said "Avanti is an important research and development project for the UKHO and we are pleased to have reached the stage where we can fully test the concept with industry players". IHMA's President, Captain Eric Atkinson, ...

Alfa Laval wins environmental order for marine exhaust gas cleaning systems to Finnlines

Alfa Laval has announced an order to supply Alfa Laval PureSOx exhaust gas cleaning systems to Finnlines Plc. The order is booked in the Marine & Offshore Systems segment and delivery is scheduled for 2014. Due to a confidentiality agreement Alfa Laval is unable to disclose the value of the order. The order includes four Alfa Laval PureSOX exhaust gas cleaning systems; it is hybrid prepared open-loop systems for four vessels to be retrofitted during end of 2014 / beginning of 2015. "This order for our scrubber technology confirms that it is an attractive and proven solution for the reduction of sulphur oxides, be it for retrofits or for installation aboard new vessels," says Lars Renström, President and CEO of the Alfa Laval Group. IMO's convention for the reduction of sulphur oxides (SOX) will affect all vessels, both new and existing. The convention demands that sulphur emission levels in certain Emission Control Areas (ECAs) shall be cut to 0.1 percent from the year 2015 and that the global emission level must not exceed 0.5 percent from the year 2020. To reach these levels ship owners can either use more expensive low-sulphur fuel or, on vessels where it is suitable, continue ...

Port of Duisburg selects Multibeam Echo sounder

The Port of Duisburg is located at the confluence of Rhine and Ruhr two major shipping arteries that link central European industry as well as consumers to the seaports on the North Sea coast. Occupying an area of 3350 acres including 21 basins with a total size of 450 acres, the Port of Duisburg moves more than 120 million tons of goods per year. Duisport - Duisburg Hafen AG, the owner of the public Port of Duisburg has decided to upgrade their survey capability from a previously used single beam echosounder to the wide swath bathymetry system GeoSwath Plus. The system provides full bathymetry coverage of the harbour basins with unprecedented resolution, while at the same time cutting down on survey time. The side scan data that is co-registered with the system can also be used to detect debris as well as mapping bottom types. The data provides the basis for monitoring and maintaining the most important asset of a port, its basins and shipping channels. Bureau Veritas speeds CSR-H implementation

International classification society Bureau Veritas has completed a series of consequence assessments with all the major shipyards in Korea, China and Japan to help them speed the implementation of the IACS Harmonised Common Structural Rules. The assessments of current yard designs were made using BV's fully adapted suites of user-friendly software for structural analysis, MARS2000 and VeriSTAR Hull. Christophe Chauviere, head of the development department for Bureau Veritas' Marine and Offshore division, says, "Because BV played a leading role in the harmonisation of the IACS Common Structural Rules we were able to rapidly update our software for the new standards. As our software tools are not class-specific and many yards already use our tools we were able to help them check out their designs and adjust them to be ready for the entry into force on July 1, 2015." MARS2000 is BV's tool for 2D prescriptive requirements assessment. It is free of charge and free access and its fast and user-friendly input process allow quick assessments of designs against the new harmonised rules. BV has invested heavily in training across its network to ensure local offices can support yards wherever they are. MARS 2000 delivers assessment of global yielding, ultimate ...

Havyard to construct hybrid battery powered Arctic PSV

Havyard, the Norwegian ship technology company, signed a contract to build a hybrid battery powered platform supply vessel (PSV) for the privately-owned Icelandic oil services company, Fafnir Offshore. The vessel is going to be designed by Havyard Design and Solutions in Fosnavaag and will be constructed at Havyard Ship Technology`s yard in Leirvik in Sogn, Norway. The vessel will become newbuild number 126, has a contract value of just above NOK 350 million and is due to be delivered in July 2015. The innovation onboard this vessel is that it is equipped with a hybrid battery powered diesel-electric propulsion system. "When we develop a new ship design we have two main focal points", says Arve Helsem Leine, Design Manager of Havyard Design & Solutions. "Those are the customer`s demands in relation to the ship`s operational needs and area of operation and also to use the latest accessible technology and research tools in order to make the ship as efficient as possible. We have invested a lot in our design philosophy and in our calculation tools and methods for testing. We also work closely with key suppliers in developing good solutions for our designs and hybrid battery power is a good ...
