Senior leadership from the hospital ship USNS Comfort, along with host, US diplomatic and partner nation representatives attended an opening ceremony to mark the start of the vessel’s medical mission stop in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, on July 23.
The hospital ship USNS Comfort arrived in Manta, Ecuador for the first mission stop of the 2019 deployment, on June 26. While in Manta, US service members and medical professionals will cooperate with partners and host nation medical professionals to provide necessary medical assistance in communities with health care needs.
The US will send a hospital ship to assist in the refugee crisis resulting from instability in Venezuela. Namely, at the annual Washington Conference on the Americas at the State Department, Vice President Mike Pence announced the Navy hospital ship USNS Comfort will deploy to the US Southern Command area of operations next month.
The US Navy’s hospital ship ‘USNS Comfort’ will be deployed to Colombia this fall to provide medical care to an increasing regional humanitarian crisis, as Venezuelans try to leave the country due to a deteriorating health and political climate. The hospital ship will assist the Colombian medical services network.
