After Bangladesh and Liberia ratified the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (the Hong Kong Convention), it is now expected to enter into force.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO), has expressed their congratulations to Bangladesh on its accession to Hong Kong ship recycling convention. 

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) welcomes the leadership shown by principal ship recycling country Bangladesh for agreeing to ratify the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (Hong Kong Convention).

BIMCO has launched its fourth industry film, calling for the urgent adoption of the Hong Kong International Convention for the safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, and for ship owners to only choose yards that live up to the convention.

ECSA (European Community Shipowners' Associations) has released a statement to warmly welcome the Bangladeshi authorities' decision to ratify the Hong Kong Convention. 

During a visit to Bangladesh by Norwegian authorities, the Norwegian Shipping Association, the European Community Shipowners’ Association, the International Chamber of Shipping and BIMCO, between 8-11 May 2023, the Bangladesh Government confirmed that the country will ratify the Hong Kong Convention.

During her recent visit to Japan, Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her intention to make efforts towards the early accession to the Hong Kong Convention (HKC) for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009, which was met with support from Japanese Prime Minister Kishida.

Lloyd's Register published a report earlier this week that evaluates upcoming changes to mandatory statutory regulations and instruments.

As previously reported, Portugal is the latest country to accede to IMO's treaty for safe and environmentally-sound ship recycling – the Hong Kong Convention. Until today, 20 Contracting States have ratified the Convention, representing 30.16% of the gross tonnage of the world's merchant shipping.

The Portuguese government announced that it has ratified the Hong Kong International Convention on Ship Recycling and incorporated it into national law. This action brings the total number of countries that have ratified the Convention to twenty (20).
