The American Club offers resources to raise awareness of sexual assault and sexual harassment (SASH) and provide tools to help ensure a safe and healthy environment for all seafarers.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) are working jointly to combat violence and harassment, including sexual harassment, bullying and sexual assault, in the maritime sector.

The IMO Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW 10) took place 5-9 February 2024, discussing the process for a comprehensive review of the STCW Convention and Code and key items for approval in the next Maritime Safety Committee (MSC).

The Seafarers’ International Union of Canada (SIU) have published a report on workplace harassment and bullying within the Canadian marine sector, which indicates that 46% of seafarers have experienced harassment or bullying at some point in their career as a seafarer.

The Coast Guard has released policies to provide guidance on implementation of several of the new laws that aim to enhance crew safety on certain commercial vessels and to prevent and respond to sexual misconduct, which includes sexual assault and sexual harassment, and harassment within the maritime industry.

According to American Club, the USCG Office of Commercial Vessel Compliance (CG-CVC) has recently released three policy letters that are intended to provide additional guidance on the implementation of the James M. Inhofe National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), Title 46 amendments for combating sexual assault and sexual harassment in the maritime industry.

According to Bitannia Club, bullying and harassment can lead to a range of negative consequences, from low staff morale to poor work performance, absenteeism, resignations, distractions, and even health and safety accidents. 

A recent report by the Seafarers’ Charity, titled ‘The port-based welfare needs of women seafarers’, shed light on the welfare needs of women working on cargo ships, and emphasized that women need to feel confident and secure to express their concerns and fears.
