After a fire broke out in one container on the deck of the Yantian Express, earlier in January, photos have now emerged depicting the damage that the fire caused to the Yantian Express' cargo. Now, the situation is under control and the ship is being towed to Halifax.

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises announced that it will use low-sulphur Marine Gas Oil on all expedition ships from July 2020. Currently, the company is using MGO in particularly vulnerable areas like the Arctic, Antarctica and Kamchatka. The routes will be managed on the basis an eco-efficient average speed, which aims to reduce fuel consumption by one third.

After a fire broke out on the the deck of the Yantian Express, on 3 January, Hapag Lloyd informed that a decision was made to evacuate the crew. The fire is under control and two additional tugs were sent to assist the vessel. The newly-added tugs are the DonJon-owned Atlantic Enterprise and the Boskalis AHTS Sovereign, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. 

Normally, when a ship is recycled in an environmentally friendly way, the workers conducting the job must wear protective clothing, helmets and safety glasses. They should also use oxy-fuel torches to cut through the thick steal piece by piece down to the keel area of the ship. Nevertheless, ships are often disassembled on beaches by people who such clothing or take any other safety measures, Hapag Lloyd notes.

"Efforts to extinguish the fire have made continuous progress under the direction of the salvage company Smit and in cooperation with the Hapag-Lloyd crew on the scene as well as Hapag-Lloyd’s emergency-response team in Hamburg," Hapag-Lloyd informed after the container fire on 'Yantian Express'.

The commercial tugboat Maersk Mobiliser will tow Hapag Lloyd's fire-stricken container ship to Halifax, New Scotland, the US Coast Guard informed in an official update. The fire broke out on 3 January in one of the containers onboard the 7,510 TEU container ship 'Yantian Express' about 1,015 miles northeast of Bermuda.

The decision was made because the fire has not been successfully contained. All of the crew are safe. The ship is 800 nautical miles off the coast of Canada.

The ship was carrying 8 officers and 15 seafarers who are all safe. Currently, Yantian Express is about 650 nautical miles off the coast of Canada.

In a bid to comply with the IMO 2020 sulphur cap, German container shipping major Hapag-Lloyd announced it has ordered ten hybrid-ready scrubbers to be gradually installed to ten of its 13,000 TEU Hamburg class vessels during 2019 and 2020. In March 2019, the retrofits will start and the first EGCS will be installed to the vessel ‘Hamburg Express’ at Qingdao Beihai shipyard in China.

Additional improvements aim to turn the company into a more analytically-driven organisation.
