In order to limit maritime crime on the Gulf of Guinea waters, and especially piracy and sea robbery, the Nigerian Navy along with France, China, Portugal, Cameroon, Ghana and Togo conducted a maritime exercise named Exercise EKU KEGBE, of which 12 Nigerian Navy ships and ships from the other countries were deployed.

Ghana's Minister for Energy, Boakye Agyarko revealed that the country is creating a Ship-to-Ship and Bunker Zones outside Tema and Takoradi Ports to safeguard Ghana's future liquid cargo sector. The African country also aims to reduce CO2 shipping emissions by 80% until 2050.

Eni has started gas production from the Sankofa field in the Offshore Cape Three Points Integrated Oil and Gas Project, in Ghana. The field will provide 180 million standard cubic feet per day for at least 15 years. This amount is enough to convert to gas half of Ghana's power generation capacity.

Represented by Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council and the National Fish Processors and Traders Association, Ghana’s small-scale fishers, fish traders and processors came together last week to make their priorities clear as the country’s fisheries laws are reformed, EJF informed.

The Environmental Justice Foundation and NGO Hen Mpoano launched a new film highlighting an illegal fishing practice in Ghana. Marking the first ever International Day for the fight against IUU fishing, the film premiered on 5 June in Ghana to demonstrate the destructive and illegal practice known locally as ‘saiko’.

The Transport Minister of Ghana launched the Ghana Chamber of Shipping, a new trade association in the country. The new association will try to win the interest of the shipping industry and gather the main stakeholders in the industry from both the demand and supply side. The Ministry of Transport will cooperate with the Ghana Chamber of Shipping to find solutions for maritime problems.

German container ship giant Hapag-Lloyd announced the official opening of its new office in Tema, the most important port city in Ghana. The company will manage most of its West African operations from this location. As such, the port of Tema could become the transhipment hub for West Africa.

After a recent piracy attack on the Ghanaian fishing vessel, "Marine 711", and the kidnapping of five sailors who were onboard the vessel, the Deputy Minister for Transport, Daniel Titus-Glover, has called port officials to make security at Ghana’s ports more strict, in order to prevent similar incidents in the future.

In order to improve the regional Maritime Security Architecture, the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States has taken delivery of a number of technical equipment from the government of Germany. The equipment includes 63 high tech communication, surveillance, monitoring, conferencing, visualization, logistics items and other accessories.

A meeting was organised by the Environmental Justice Foundation, Hen Mpoano and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. It brought together all levels of decision makers, from traditional authorities, to local and national government, and discussed how the voluntary guidelines could inform law making in Ghana to save the future of fishing communities.
