Stena Line goes green with fuel oil homogenisers

Stena Line  will take advantage of LEMAG’s SLASHPOL-E WIF homogenisers to reduce NOx emissions, particulate matter, smoke, and most of all fuel consumption.  The company has fitted a total of sixteen of its vessels with LEMAG WIF homogenisers. The combination of LEMAG SLASHPOL E-WIF and the HFT stabiliser results in significantly increased fuel economy, while reducing the NOx, black smoke and particulate matter, and CO2 emissions, states LEMAG.WIF (water in fuel) homogenisers have been around for a long time, but like a lot of existing marine technology it has received a lot of renewed interest in the last few years, which has resulted in increased investment in R&D. This is due not only to the soaring fuel costs up to 2015 and the need to reduce emissions, but the knowledge within the marine industry that the WIF technology has advanced to the point where it is now a very viable investment for ship owners and operators. The complete LEMAG SLASHPOL E-WIF system comprises of torsion meters, Coriolis or PD fuel meters, and it’s V-Per monitoring and management system, as well as incorporating an impressive range of safety devices which are absolutely essential to give total confidence to the operators, in what is virtually a plug ...

Eniram releases new LNG engine fuel-saving solution

Eniram Ltd announced at Gastech the release of Eniram Engine, a new tool to help guide TFDE LNG Carriers’ Engineers and Officers use the engines and fuel in the most efficient way.High engine efficiency is imperative in order to achieve low SFC and cost savings. Eniram Engine takes into account real-time actual engine operation by combining data from onboard fuel flow meters with generator loads, power produced and Specific Fuel Consumption (SFC).Analyzing the data, Eniram Engine  then suggests optimal engine combination and fuel type for the prevailing conditions in order to save fuel.Eniram Engine understands the different operating modes of LNG carriers. When fuel oil is used to supplement Boil-Off Gas (BOG) as a fuel for the ship’s propulsion and energy systems, Eniram Engine will provide guidance only with this mixed fuel usage.Additionally, if the carrier is equipped with a reliquefication plant and the BOG is reliquefied and fuel oil is used for the engines, then only suggestions for fuel oil usage are provided. In addition, the Buffer feature of Eniram Engine  helps Engineers understand how much operating reserve power (or buffer) they have available for each engine suggestion compared to the actual, in case there is a sudden need to increase power ...

New EGR Economiser offers potential for massive fuel savings

Alfa Laval claims Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) on MAN B&W engines combined with a new pressurized EGR economizer from Alfa Laval offers the potential for massive fuel savings.“EGR provides Tier III NOx compliance with a very compact footprint, but compliance itself is only part of the full potential,” says John Pedersen, Business Manager, Boilers, Combustion & Heaters at Alfa Laval. “Working closely with MAN Diesel & Turbo to optimize the EGR technology, we saw additional opportunities through our expertise in marine boilers. The result is the Alfa Laval Aalborg EGR-HPE economizer, which paves the way for extraordinary energy and fuel savings.”Developed by Alfa Laval in close cooperation with MAN Diesel & Turbo, the Aalborg EGR-HPE is a revolutionary new economizer enclosed in a pressure casing. Placed in-line ahead of the pre-scrubber sprayers in the EGR circuit, it can be used for a number of advantages. If connected to a conventional waste heat recovery system, for example, waste heat recovery becomes substantially more efficient – and is possible at significantly lower engine loads.“By moving the break point for waste heat recovery from a medium engine load down to a low load, the Aalborg EGR-HPE enables even slower steaming,” says Pedersen. “That ...

Fixed pitch propeller delivers excellent results in service

One of the first commercial applications of MAN Diesel & Turbo’s new MAN Alpha Kappel FP propeller took place off the coast of China recently when the ‘Elsabeth C’, a 58,500-dwt Supramax bulk carrier owned by Frontmarine Co. Ltd successfully completed its sea trials. The newbuilding is the first in a series of eight sister-ships, all featuring single MAN B&W 5S60ME-C8.2 engines with an SMCR 8050 kW @ 89 rpm. The Elsabeth C’s sister ship, ‘Mirela’, the second in the series, has since successfully completed its own sea trials.Lemissoler reports that the Kappel propeller offers significant fuel savings compared to conventional propellers and, together with the new vessels’ design and lines as well as the silyl acrylate antifouling paint, contributed to the favourable results from the first two vessels’ sea trials. It reports that both vessels consumed an average 23 mtns per day at a speed of about 14.2 knots in ballast conditions during the trials. The Elsabeth C also performed a successful crash-stop test that was notable for its lack of noise and vibration.Thomas Leander, Head of Propulsion – PrimeServ Four-Stroke – Denmark, said: “A key point during the design stage was to address the problem experienced by similar vessels that ...
