In order to limit maritime crime on the Gulf of Guinea waters, and especially piracy and sea robbery, the Nigerian Navy along with France, China, Portugal, Cameroon, Ghana and Togo conducted a maritime exercise named Exercise EKU KEGBE, of which 12 Nigerian Navy ships and ships from the other countries were deployed.

French oil major Total announced the closing of the acquisition of compatriot Engie’s portfolio of upstream liquefied natural gas (LNG) assets for an overall enterprise value of $1.5 billion. This transaction makes Total the second largest global LNG player, the company claimed.

In the morning hours of 23 June, the ship, owned by the Danish shipping company Thorco Projects, was underway in the South Pacific, heading from Baltimore, US, to Hobart, Australia, when she encountered an engine trouble and ran aground on Raroia atoll, in French Polynesia.

The European Investment Bank will support the development of Marseille's port. Namely, it will allocate €50m for five strategic projects in a variety of sectors such as container terminals in the Port of Marseille Fos, the reorganization of the Corsican/ Maghreb ferry terminals and the development of the Feuillane logistics zone.

French oil and gas major Total inked an agreement with Russian LNG producer Novatek to acquire a direct working interest of 10% in Arctic LNG 2, the giant LNG project lead by Novatek on the Gydan Peninsula in the north of Siberia. The deal was signed in the presence of the Russian and French Presidents.

The Costa Group and the Marseille Fos Port Authority announced a collaboration between the two, to make Marseille a port technology hub. The agreement includes a joint commitment to protect the environment, create a dedicated warehouse and a training project for naval officers and engineers in Marseille.

A French court has sued the Captain of the cruise ship 'Azura', operated by P&O Cruises, over breaching sulphur fuel limit, during the ship’s stopover in Marseilles on 29 March. If found guilty, the Master could face up to a year in prison and a fine of up to €200,000.

NABU and Ecologistas en Acción found levels of contamination up to 70 times greater in the the Strait of Gibraltar and Barcelona, than the pollution on cities. Under this light, Ecologistas en Acción called the Spanish government to join France in the creation of Sulfur Emission Control Areas that limits the entry of highly polluting vessels in the Mediterranean.

The NGO Transport & Environment released a ranking in which it presents the best and worst performing countries in Europe's attempt to reduce GHG emissions. Germany, Belgium and France are the top performers, while Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Portugal and Croatia are the worst.
