World’s Longest Ever LNG-powered journey

A new ship for Norwegian shipping firm Nor Lines has set the milestone in shipping history as the world’s first vessel to sail from Asia and Europe solely on liquefied natural gas (LNG). Kvitbjørn is a 5,000 DWT short sea cargo vessel built to Rolls-Royce’s award-winning Environship concept. The ship sailed to Norway from Tsuji Heavy Industries shipyard in Jiangsu, China, via Singapore, and subsequently LNG bunkerings in Cochin, India and Cartagena, Spain. This was the longest voyage ever undertaken by a vessel running solely on LNG and was completed in Bergen on 29 March. Tor Arne Borge, Nor Lines, CEO said: “The success of the voyage from Asia to Europe on LNG not only confirms the energy-saving and emissions-reduction attributes of Rolls-Royce’s pure gas engine but provides evidence to owners of larger tonnage that LNG is not just for short sea coastal ships. The Environship concept with the Bergen engine has exceeded all our expectations.” The Environship, which can be adapted for different ship types, incorporates a range of  Rolls-Royce technologies to deliver efficiency savings for ship owners. These include a Bergen engine powered by LNG, the Promas combined rudder and propeller, a hybrid shaft generator to optimise ...

Rolls-Royce wins award for its Environship Concept

Heyerdahl Award 2014 for contribution to energy efficiency and emissions reduction Rolls-Royce has been awarded the maritime Heyerdahl Award 2014. The award was presented by His Majesty King Harald at the Norwegian Shipowners' Associations Annual Conference in Oslo 31 March. The award goes to the Environship Concept, an innovative ship design which integrates a highly efficient gas-based power and propulsion system with an innovative hull design to provide significant reductions in emissions. The expert committee, chaired by Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) Peter Hincliffe, said in its reasoning that Rolls-Royce had taken a holistic approach to vessel design and has succeeded in combining a number of innovative solutions that increase energy efficiency and contribute to significant reductions in emissions. The committee emphasized that the measures are adaptable for a broad range of ship types and have the potential to reduce emissions from many segments of the worldwide fleet.Helge Vatnehol, Managing Director of Rolls-Royce Marine AS in Norway, received the award on behalf of Rolls-Royce: "We strongly believe that to succeed in making emissions reductions, several types of environmental technologies have to be combined. This is the basic idea behind our Environship concept and it is therefore a great ...

First Rolls-Royce low emission Environship delivered

New design of cargo ship which will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40% Rolls-Royce Plc has delivered the first of a revolutionary new design of cargo ship which will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40 per cent, thanks to a combination of cutting edge marine technology, including a wave-piercing bow and an engine powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).The firstRolls-RoyceEnvironship, of NVC 401 LNG design, theEidsvaag Pioner, has been delivered to Norwegian company Eidsvaag AS this week, and will soon enter service on a year-round schedule delivering feed to numerous fish farms around the Norwegian coast. The Environship, which can be adapted for different ship types, incorporates a range ofRolls-Roycetechnologies to deliver efficiency savings for ship owners. When compared to similar sized diesel powered ships, the CO2 reduction can be up to 40 per cent.Neil Gilliver,Rolls-Royce, President- Merchant, said: "The Environship has now moved from concept to reality with the successful delivery of the first ship. We firmly believe that the only way to make significant reductions in emissions and fuel costs is to combine a range of innovative technologies into one ship. Environship does just that, by bringing together complementary technologies as part of a highly efficient propulsion ...

Second Environship order for Rolls-Royce

It is able to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40% Rolls-Royce has announced a second contract for a vessel to one of its Environship designs, in this case for a 75m LNG-powered vessel for Norwegian company Eidsvaag, to supply fish farms along the Norwegian coast. The NVC 401 forage carrier is the latest design from the Environship range and incorporates a number of features to reduce environmental impact while increasing efficiency. According to Rolls-Royce, it will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40% compared to similar diesel powered ships.Rolls-Royce will supply all the main systems and equipment, as well as the ship design. The hull design features a wave piercing bow, while the scope of equipment supply includes a Bergen C26:33L9PG gas engine developing 2,430kW at 1,000rpm, driving a Promas propulsion system which combines a CP propeller and rudder. The reduction gearbox handles power take-off and take-in for the 1,100kW shaft generator in a variable speed HSG (hybrid shaft generator ) configuration linked to two 400kW auxiliary gensets. The high lift rudder is complemented by a 540kW tunnel bow thruster and a similar unit in the stern skeg.Rolls-Royce will also supply a DP1 system with joystick, to hold the ship ...

Environship from idea to reality

This concept won the "Next Generation Ship Award" On the 18th of October, Norwegian ro-ro operator, Nor Lines, signed a contract ordering two liquefied natural gas-powered (LNG) vessels to be built by China's Tsuji Heavy Industries. The building of the two new Nor Lines vessels signifies the realization of "Environship". This concept, which was developed in close collaboration with Rolls-Royce, won the "Next Generation Ship Award" during this year's Nor-Shipping.Powered by LNGIn addition to being powered by LNG, the vessels also incorporate gas-electric propulsion systems and on-board power-generation that increase the vessel's energy efficiency. While powered on LNG, the vessels will sharply reduce the emissions of hazardous natural gasses, reducing the emissions of Nitric oxide (NOx) by 90%, CO2 by 40% and eliminating sulfur and particle emissions. The two vessels are expected to be delivered from October 2013 and will be used to load cargoes in Germany or the Netherlands, for delivery to ports along the Norwegian coastline. The order also comes with an option for two more vessels. The contract between Nor Lines and Tsuji Heavy Industries will trigger significant contributions from Norway as more than half of the contract value will be delivered by Norwegian sub-suppliers, mainly within environmental technologyPromoting ...
