Port of Amsterdam created an energy platform for companies to share electricity with each other. The initiative is called Shared Energy Platform (SEP), and is an initiative of Port of Amsterdam in close collaboration with Entrnce.
The European Commission’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Committee has approved aid for two projects in the Port of Valencia that will facilitate and accelerate the possibility of connecting ships to the electricity grid.
APM Terminals has in its plans to add electric automated straddle carriers to its Pier 400 facility in the Port of Los Angeles. This move has raised protests by longshore union leaders, who asked the city’s council to intervene, as they believe that longshoremen will lose hundreds of shifts per day, because of the new technology.
Antwerp is the fifth-largest bunkering port in the world. For this reason it aims to become a Multi-Fuel Port by 2025, meaning a port where in addition to conventional fuels, alternative, more sustainable fuels can also be made available. This is the process of providing shoreside electrical power to a ship at berth, while its main and auxiliary engines are turned off.
At the start of 2019, Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG and its partners started research and development work on the publicly funded FRESH project at its Container Terminal Altenwerder. FRESH stands for flexibility management and control reserve provision of heavy goods vehicles in the harbour. The aim of the research is to incorporate the battery capacities of the automated guided container transport vehicles (AGVs) that are in use at CTA into the German energy network as flexible storage units that contribute to the grid stability of the power supply.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that the first all-electric straddle carrier in the US is coming to the Port of New York and New Jersey by the end of this year. This is part of initiatives to meet goals for greenhouse gas emissions reductions set forth in the Paris Climate Agreement.
ESPO presented its annual Environmental Report for 2018 at the GreenPort Congress in Valencia. The ESPO Environmental Report reported that Air quality is the top priority of the European ports since 2013, while the increased interest in the relationship with local community in position 4.
The Port of Long Beach will build a $7.1 million ‘microgrid’ to show the present new technology’s effectiveness in providing a clean, reliable supply of electricity for critical operations at the US’s second-busiest seaport. The Port will establish a solar carport, power storage systems and advanced controls.
